Title: New Toyota Corolla.
Post by: Belker on November 27, 2018, 06:59:25 am
Did anyone have a look at the new 2019 Corolla that Toyota are offering ?
(https://i.postimg.cc/9R0F3LVy/Corolla-2019.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/9R0F3LVy)

It comes as a 1.8 Hybrid fer 26,820 (is that Diesel ?) or a 1.6 Petrol fer 25,685.

The Avensis is finished off this year and fer Toyota men like myself the choice now is Corolla or Camry.
The Camry is lovely 'n all, but it's much too good fer a night time Taxi and the amount of buttons on it
is scary, lots of buttons fer things that I have never even heard of.
The new Corolla is more bog basic and I like bog basic !

] Made the mistake of buying new the "New Avensis" in 2003, a mountain of trouble in the first 100k miles. Ran fine for me for the subsequent 200k miles until sold. Would not buy a first edition again, let them iron out the bugs first.

Cheers Harry  ::cheers
My current Cab licence doesn't expire till 2023.2 so I'm in no hurry to buy new,
like you said; "Let them iron out all the bugs first" and then maybe I will go
New in 2022 or 2023 when my 'Seven year plan' of putting away 80 notes a week
comes to fruition.

Fer anyone interested, my 'Seven year plan' was put in to place about 4 years ago, shortly after the NTA introduced the Ten year limit on Saloon plates, thankfully as an 08 driver I got the once off 'Golden' 15 year rule exemption, and then I had a long think about how to finance my next vehicle.

So I opened a Second online 'Car' bank account about Four years ago, and the First bill that I pay every Sunday morning is 80 notes in to my Car account in the hope that in another 3 years time I will be able to buy a new Joe, Finance free, No Rental charges, No Bank charges.

It's not the best plan in the world, a better more economical plan would be to buy a second hand yoke every Five years or so, but fer me my plan works and I fully intent to drive around Cork city in my new 2022.2 Corolla with a FOOKIN ERECTION !

Anyways Ken,i was in my local Toyota Stealership a few weeks back, picked up brochures for the new Corolla and Camry Hybrids....the Corolla engine is the same as the Prius,1.8 petrol/electric..the Camry Hybrid is a 2.5 petrol/electric

Same question to any other hybrid drivers on here ?

2022.2 is my plan to buy new and I doubt that we will be all electric by then,
granted in time we defintely will be all electric but there's another Ten years to go yet.

I HOPE !!
Title: Re: New Toyota Corolla.
Post by: Shallowhal on November 28, 2018, 11:17:53 am
@Ken,Gonna say 1.8 hybrid, been driving them since 06 and find them efficient, can't see myself buying new again,my current 2011 was four yrs old when i got it(2015) and it cost me 15k and i'll have it until 2021,a new one would have cost me double that but would only have got me an extra four years and like yourself i'm saving for my replacement car cos i don't want to be tied to monthly car repayments although i'll hopefully continue to save what i'm currently saving into the future,
I'd like to think i could go electric but as you say i think it's gonna be a few years yet,i want to be able to do a whole nights driving including the drive from Drog and back home again without the "fear"...or range anxiety as it's known...and then if i work 5 nights per week and constant recharging, what will the battery life be,i honestly don't think you'd get 10 yrs out of it and will the grants still be available?
Title: Re: New Toyota Corolla.
Post by: Belker on November 28, 2018, 11:47:58 am
Thanks fer that Hal, I was leaning toward the 1.6 petrol because in reality 'I knew no better' and I have
never driven a Hybrid or Electric car and also I dispise any type of change !
But I suppose Hybrid is the way to go and also I much prefer the bigger 1.8 engine, thanks fer the advice.

I know my plan is not the most economic plan ever, but I'm 53 and a Half now and by 2022.2 I'll be 57.
And the thought of the new 'finance free' car gives me something to look forward to.
After 2022.2 I will continue to save in the unlikely event that I make it to 2032.2, but this will be my
last New car as after 2032.2 there won't be much point in me looking fer another car to last Ten years
as I most definately wont !

I really don't fancy the idea of Electric either, I would often have young lads in the cab ask me what I think about going Electric ?
I tell 'em; "There a coming, you will be driving 'em in a few years time and I won't ! Because I'll be Fookin Dead and ya can Fookin have 'em !"

The last time i spoke with her i raised that question and it's something i'll deal with,my tax liability was higher this year cos the missus practically worked full-time last year,so far this year she's only worked her normal job share hours so i'll be able to use her unused tax credits for the 2018 tax year returns(2019)...it's good to be tax efficient!!

Diesel.
Naw ! Diesel is a Dead Duck, the Pink 'n Fluffies are constantly lobbying against it,
and these days the Pink 'n Fluffies always get what they want.
London and Paris and 6 other major european cities already have plans in place to
eradicate the diesel engine and many more including ourselves will follow suit shortly.

The Camry isn't really that fancy but it isnt cheap. All them extra buttons will be blank unless you spend an extra 4k.They have made the mistake of pricing it too high at 39k for a car with cloth seats. Can't see it being very popular at that price, even with taxi drivers.

By the way the base Camry in the US is $28000....big difference. We're getting robbed.

Give us an idea what's an interesting motor C5?

The opel insignia, Peugeot 508sw, Volvo v60 and v70, Audi A5, Passat, mondeo, Skoda superb and what I'm driving Citroen c5 2ltr hdi 197,000 miles with hydromantic suspension its my second one previous one 2003 which I still have with 637,000 miles, all those cars are interesting, comfortable and reliable and nice to drive, cannot get the obsession with Toyota with lot of taxi drivers, a uninspiring, boring uncomfortable horse box of a car the avensis and corolla to spend up to 8 to 12 hour days in, I had one Toyota never again I used to be stiff getting out of it after a shift. my next taxi will be a pick of list above a used one. Ya need a bit comfort and driving enjoyment in this job.
Title: Re: New Toyota Corolla.
Post by: mercenary for hire on November 29, 2018, 09:48:21 pm
Ah I take your point but the car isn't part of me.It's a work vehicle.Toyotas are less likely to breakdown. They're number one on all reliability surveys with Lexus usually number two.French or German makers just dont cut it.

Taxi driving is definitely the most boring job I've ever had. I spend me day moving between red lights usually slower than 50kmh in traffic. A nicer car won't make that any better.French cars have shite reputations, whether they still deserve them or not I can't be sure.My oulfella fixed a lot of French cars when I was a kid and he despised them.Audis are known for higher maintenance costs due to the way they're engineered not to be worked on easily by DIYers.VAG group use torx screws on way too many bits to keep the Youtube fixers away.Whats wrong with a normal bolt?

A lot of us are former couriers and would swear by Japanese motorcycles for reliability. So sticking with the Jap cars seems sensible.Boring job, boring car. When I get out of it I don't care for it or think about it afterwards.

That day of French cars being unreliable are long gone, I've driven a few to know as I dipped in and out of owning them, the last two have been prof of the improvement, 637,000 miles and 197,000 miles so far, sure the Toyota aygo and proace van are really the Peugeot 1008 and the expert van with Toyota badges on them, if they were that bad Toyota would have stayed away.
Toyota seems to be losing its shine with taxi drivers in Galway, I see more vw, Skoda, ford, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, dacia, merc and Audi around even a few more bmw. I know a few avensis with snapped timing chains, injectors problems belching out smoke, I've even noticed the quality of paint work on them after a few years the clear coat peeling off on the front nose, bonnet and boot even on the tops of the door panels, what's the story there. I've worked on vag cars with no problems, those torxs bits and stuff is easily available on mickgarage.ie and halfords, its where I got my stuff. I think its drivers wanting to stand out from the crowd changing brand getting more confident and to draw the customers eye to their taxi cause all the Africans are in Toyotas, remember the green light thing in Dublin will this is like it, don't flag the Toyota its probably an African. :-)

Toyotas are relatively expensive secondhand.Drivers are making a few quid again so they don't mind taking a chance on something different that might be better value.Variety is good I suppose.I'm busy enough not to be wanting the customers with notions me motor. My last taxi was a 2000 Primera so the Prius is luxurious by comparison. The next heap will most likely be full electric or a rickshaw.

Just thinking I wonder is the build quality of the Toyota worse on the ones built in the Uk.The Carina was a simpler car but built in Japan.Prius was built in Japan along with all of the Lexuses. The Japs seem to take pride in their work.

All the recalls for Toyota are down to outsourcing. Actually, several marques were assembled in France. The only Jap part now in a Toyota is the engine. I would agree with C5 about the French cars having improved reliability but they I hear they're still dodgy electrically. Toyota have shot themselves in both feet over the yrs with all these recalls...........and how does anyone afford to keep an Audi on the road?

Thanks C5. I have either driven or owned almost every type of car under the sun to include me Mum's crock of a Mini back in the Eighties to a Maserati Quattro fer an old regular base client and fer me Toyota works, it's comfortable, it's reliable and most important fer me is that I know where all the buttons are and what they do. I don't like change, I don't want to have to learn where or what all the new buttons on a car are.
It's bad enough these days that on an almost weekly basis we have to deal with up-dates or up-grades from IOS, MyTaxi, Microsoft, Firefox browser or Outlook express and I only bluff my way through all the up-dates praying that I did hit the right button !

'POOF'  Blink once and the plan is gone !

I dipped in to the fund last year fer the first time ever and dipping in again the Second time was easy,
and then after a very lazy Jan and Feb Covid came upon us and I had to dip again.

The Dream was gone !

I was never going to make it to 28K fer the new Corolla Hybrid, but it kinda didn't worry me as a used Avensis would be my kinda preferred option. I had a peep at Carzone, 171C Avensis Sol, Granite Grey, 18K and thought; "That's my Bitch" !
Collecting it on Monday, Paid in Cash, Suitability on Wednesday.

Nope, Irish car but the valid NCT was over 90 days old,
so to pass Suitability it needed an NCT cert within 90 days.

As an Irish 171 it needs a new NCT cert (less than 90 days old) to pass Taxi Suitability.

Garages love selling part worn cars .Lets say new Price is 30K VRT and Vat must be about 10k so the actual worth of the car is 20K after tax .They then resell you a 3 year old car for 17K it has cost the original owner 13k to own it but as far as the Garage is concerned it only lost 3K in value .Fucking Robbery of the highest order .

The yearly vehicle cost of my wanked out French panel van is €875.76, I’ll get 9.5 years out of it.

The only way you’d buy a expensive motor for taxi use is if you’ve a big tax bill ya need to write off against it.

It just passed it’s 3rd nct on Tuesday albeit failing 1st on a offside rear brake bulb.

Best of luck with the new motor Ken, I think your mad not to go hybrid but hey ho.

Difference is you are mechanically proficient, I sell/trade in my car shortly after it's first "non standard" repair (Clutch/DPF filter/Flywheel etc) or if I hear a new noise from the engine, these problems  begin the paranoia and I quickly replace it with a new(er) vehicle I can once again have confidence in.
I find being able to write off a large portion of my income against capital depreciation a big incentive in this regard, it certainly wouldn't be an option otherwise.
I guess you could say my job pays for my nice family car, which I couldn't afford with any other job ... relevant to my qualifications.
I would imagine your car spends more time on a low loader/ ramp than those of us whose vehicles are newer ...seems logical?

There is a direct relationship between the type/brand of car you drive and how much maintenance is required.

More miles/work means more maintenance too.I'm probably not as handy as Panel but I haven't had great experiences with mechanics so I do it myself where possible. The fact that I prefer jap cars makes it a whole lot less stressful as they don't really break often.

My most expensive purchase in the last three years was new tyres.

The Corolla is smaller by about an Inch either side Front to Back or Side to Side,
I much prefer the 'Kick Ass' D4D 2 Liter Avensis also.
And was happy to give up my Dream of a new Corolla in favour of a 17 Avensis.

Like Panel I intend to get 10 years out of my van.
Unlike Panel I know F all about cars. In the 4 years I have it the biggest outlay  (not including servicing etc) was €300 for an exhaust.
Family car is not my work car.

Taxi driver in Cork a number of years ago was know as The man with no legs.
No one ever saw him out of his car.
Brilliant.  There's a 76 year old neighbour driving a cab. He only has one arm.
He's known locally  as The Bandit!

Each to their own, but I’d hate to spend 30-80 hours a week in a breadvan, I’d much prefer to spend an extra €5-€10 a day for a bit of comfort

You’d imagine wrong, the only time it was on a low loader in its life when it was being transported from the BCA auction house in Liverpool to the Dublin docks after me purchasing it sight unseen.

It suits certain fellas to buy a up the years motor to save on maintenance, it was just never me, the best ever was when I bought a 94 Carina from Merlin auctions for €250, got 4 years service out of it and was even prostituted out every now and again for €100pw. Different times.

Give this fella a watch he can be a bit crass but he’s 100% right in the main points https://youtu.be/NvZJb_ydvUk

What he says is True, apart from the very generous tax relief we Taxi drivers get, I'd hate to be giving revenue the 4-5 grand a year, (I'd be paying 43% as my wife has all the tax relief}

Roy yer tax argument is daft. You have to spend a lot to get small amount of tax back.

Even when I return to work I won't be overspending on a car to slightly reduce my tax bill. How about buying a car that doesn't have expensive maintenance bills? If it needs thousands spent on it every few years maybe it isn't fit for purpose as a working vehicle?

I get that you're making more money than me because you have less expenses (mind you I don't have a mortgage ...it's paid) but I don't want to have to spend my time in a banger, the only time I really hated this job is when I was in a crap rental heap for a week, while my last car was in the panel beaters after an accident

I’d guess that MFHs break even point is Tuesday afternoon, and then there are some lads who’s break even point is Friday morning at 3am.

I can see valid arguments for both sides, but I’d imagine it’s better to take a night off work to go for a pint or some other leisure activity than it is to have a 201 Skoda looking at ya in the driveway that needs it’s monthly installment paid.

Yeah Panel my car is paid off now about six years so I've had it easy.I had chances to change but resisted because I knew meant more hours.

If/When I upgrade next year I'll give myself about a year to clear it off then I'll go back to taking it easier again. The thoughts of a few years of loans isn't my idea of fun.Especially seeing how quick things can change.

I see the limo lads are looking for government aid on the news tonight. They're the extreme end of debt and they're screwed now that the airports are closed.

It’s hard enough to get people into wanked out French panel vans at the mo, I can only image trying to get people into a wanked out 12 year old executive saloons at extortionate prices.

Those lads sold a line of gick by fn and Uber doing limo work for them must be fucked, just goes to show that that business model isn’t worth a wank, fn and Uber limos are only busy when taxis are busy, when it falls flat on its gee your better off having a taxi on the driveway than a 2008 S Class, you’ll have some chance of a weekly working a taxi during the financial shitshow.

Get yourself on a car forum Ken and hopefully this one doesn't cost you as much as the last one.All the maintenance critical information you need is out there on the net.Get to know your vehicle and any potential problems.

You don't even have to do the work yourself but at least you'll will know how not to make a bollox of the new one.

What actually happened with the old car?You seem very shy about telling us why you are changing.Seems odd to me.

I know STC but they go extra cheap because they were a taxi.My car is better maintained than most so if you got something cheap it could be worth a gamble.

From what I'm hearing secondhand motors aren't shifting unless they're keenly priced because of the COVID shite so you could offer a lot less than asking and still get it.

From what I'm hearing secondhand motors aren't shifting unless they're keenly priced because of the COVID shite so you could offer a lot less than asking and still get it.
2 Years left on my nearly new 07 Avensis , will wait and see what the industry lands us with in that time

Not really a Ford lover....the missus drives an 07 Focus(from new).....over the last five years....only that i have access to a lift....it would have cost a fortune to repair...from some minor things can could be done on the driveway to replacing rear axle bushes(absolute pig of a job)......welding exhaust mounts(Fords don't do rust well)....hub bearings and plenty of other stuff i can't be arsed rrying to remember.

Yeah Hal I've read that about Fords but they're lovely..Next car I buy has to have double glazed driver windows. The only thing I don't like about my banger is the road noise.

Used to be a time you could only get double glazing on fancy motors like lexuses/Mercs but now they're in the new Leaf and I believe the gen 4 Prius too.

I drove over to the Cliffs of Moher a few weeks ago and I wished I brought me ear plugs.Could barely hear the radio.

It's said a huge percentage of road noise is down to the tyres

Yeah Roy I've read that and I've got Bridgestones on it but they wouldn't be the fancy ones.Maybe I'll put new newer ones on.It will be gone in March anyway.

Most of the time it's around they city so not as noticeable. If it had a diesel engine I'd never notice the road noise!.

It is a kinda Hybrid as it does not burn diesel or let out emissions when the 'Kick ass' 2 liter D4D engine is turned off !

I was only thinking of you the other night Octy and seeing as your a tall lad then this car would really suit you as there is plenty of space fer the driver and not cramped in the least.

Three Strings Walk Into a Bar
They all get a table and one of the strings says he’ll buy them drinks.

He goes up to the bar and says “Three beers please.” The bartender looks at him and says “Sorry, we don’t serve strings here.” The string says “What? You’re joking. No strings?” The bartender says “That’s right. Sorry”. The string goes back to his friends and tells them what the bartender said.

One of the strings says “No way. That’s absurd. You probably just realized you don’t have enough money. Fine, I’ll get the drinks guys.” He goes up to the bar, and slams the table. “Three beers!” The bartender turns to him and says “Hey, like I told your friend, I don’t serve strings here.” The string protests “That’s insane; I’ll even pay extra if you need me, but you can’t just turn me down for being a string.” The bartender raises his voice as he says to the string “I can turn you down, and that’s my policy so get out!” The second string sees there’s no point and storms off back to his friends to tell them the first string was right and they should find another bar.

Suddenly, the third string said “Wait guys, I’ve got an idea.” And worrying someone, mainly the bartender may happen to overhear, he whispered it to his other friends. Next thing you know, they start rolling themselves into a ball and in doing so, they start tearing their ends apart. When they finished, they rolled up to the bar and the third string stuck his head out and said “Three beers please.” The bartender turned to him and said “Sure thing.” But, as he was pouring the drinks, he got suspicious because he remembered those strings who kept trying to order three beers. Turning back to the third string, he asked “Hey, you’re not one of those strings are you?” The third string said to him “Nope. I’m a frayed knot.

On the Automatic you get adaptive cruise control, where if the car in front slows, you slow accordingly, if it come to a stop. you stop, it's amazing! you just point the car in the right direction and off you go

Mine has that cruise control as well and mines a manual.  I use it on the motorways, its dead handy. Tipping the brake or pressing the clutch will disengage it. I find the reversing camera shite at night ken, especially if its raining and a drop gets on the lens, which it always does. Its good during the day just don't reverse judging the distance by it. Its a wide angle lens and stuff always appears further than it is. Its sole purpose is to see if there's any children behind you.

We're talking about adaptive cruise control whereby the car automatically slows if the car in front slows and increases speed up to the desired speed if the car in front does so, it will also come to a complete stop if the car in front does
I don't know how this operates in a manual but seemingly it now can
old cruise control disengaged once you had to brake in order to slow down for the car ahead

.... I had a peep at Carzone, 171C Avensis Sol, Granite Grey, 18K and thought; "That's my Bitch" !
Collecting it on Monday, Paid in Cash, Suitability on Wednesday.

is the NCT in date 90 days
Yes, (Long story) but they NCT'd it fer me yesterday.....
To explain the ("Long story") as me NCT mate is now retired.

I bought the car (July 2020) with the provisio that it be NCT'd ASAP.
That was all agreed with the dealer and some funds were handed over, all was good.
Even though it was early covid times with the NCT open I expected the NCT to be done within a few days.

The dealer rings me later that day with a smug excited tone telling me that he had eventually managed to get an NCT date in 10 days time !
Me; "What ! 10 Fookin days time !! .... Leave it with me ...".

I rang me mate in the NCT and got it sorted then rang the car dealer back stating;
"Your ON fer tomorrow morning, be there at 8am, ask fer Jxxx and it's booked in fer Ken and Dxxx if anyone asks...",
The car dealer flaps; "But, but how did you do that ?  I might, might not have any personel to get the car there",
Me; "BE THERE AT 8AM".
And to be fair he did get the car there on time and it passed..

An awful lot of people don't turn up, esp if their appointment is months in advance.  So there's cancellation slots.  The motorheads over on Boards.ie say looking at the website shortly after midnight is best because that's when the cancellation slots are released back into the system.

I've gone through this 3 or 4 times in the last year (with family members etc).  Just phone them with your expiry date and say 'the computer' won't give you a decent slot.  You go on a waiting list and you get a text a week or two before your NCT runs out.  Simples.

The important thing is to have something (a test date or 'you're on the list' message) on your phone in the very rare case you get stopped by the Gardai.
