Driving an unregistered car and overcharging: Increase in number of complaints about taxis (http://https://www.thejournal.ie/taxi-complaints-4-4400002-Dec2018/)
1,163 complaints up to the end of Nov 2018. More than the 1,146 for the whole of 2017!
The complaints received about taxis were about driver behaviour (474), vehicle condition (46), hiring matters (222), fare matters (418) and identification (3; location and content of logos, stickers or ads).
I quite like the attitude of this driver...
Complaint: “I handed the driver a €20 note. The driver stated that he did not have any change to give me. He stopped the fare and decided he would bring us to a shop in order for him to get change.
“The driver stopped the vehicle at our destination and handed me €8. I informed the taxi driver that the correct change was in fact €8.40. With this, he opened the rear passenger door and proceeded to lift the rear passenger seat looking for small change. “The driver eventually gave me the correct change and the journey was complete.”
Outcome: Not proceeded with – No response from complainant when contacted.
Congrats are also due to the Guards. They're catching up with us! Approx 900/yr
Gardaí fined 4,595 times for disciplinary breaches over five years (http://https://www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/gardaí-fined-4-595-times-for-disciplinary-breaches-over-five-years-1.3746938)
A total of 4,595 fines were issued against members of An Garda Síochána for disciplinary breaches over a five-year period, leading to €357,930 being deducted from their wages and salaries, new figures show. The fines were imposed for a range of offences that included discreditable conduct, neglect of duty, falsehood or prevarication, discourtesy and engaging in corrupt or improper practice.

They usually separate out the DAA villains, that isn't evident in the analysis reported. This is a weird one... the penalty seems to have nothing to do with the complaint:
Complaint: “Requested a taxi to go to the airport [that was] able to accept credit cards, the driver agreed and accepted the service. Once we got to the airport the payment terminal did not work, therefore I had to go into the terminal, got the fare and paid in cash.
Outcome: Fixed Payment Notice – Failure to print and offer a receipt.
-
Dunno. Maybe the 'payment terminal' was his MyTaxi phone and he did the fare without turning on the meter (fixed fare?)? Then, if his phone broke/ran out of data, he was left in the lurch and unable to give a receipt from either his printer or his MyTaxi phone?
-
... but they only complained about having to hand over legal tender, the complaint doesn't mention the receipt at all. If I was the driver I would have said the receipt printed as normal and, as is generally the case, by the time it was finished printing the client was gone.
-
he should have just written out a hand written receipt on a piece of paper.
id say the customer who reported the driver for not giving the change was one of those people who fights with people in the service industry every day, its 40 cent, get over it. a taxi driver in germany owed my friend 3 or 4 euro change and did not give it to him, we just got on with our day, imagine ringing up the NTA over 40 cent which they GOT.
-
To be fair, any driver should have change of a score. I know there's no legal obligation to give change, the obligation is on the passenger to discharge the fare in legal tender... but it is customary in the normal course of business. It may be that he just forgot his float or something but he should have rounded the fare down rather than up, IMO.
-
I’d say the NTA fined him for not issueing a receipt as he probably didn’t give them a receipt and it took a bit of digging to get his details.
-
Maybe an immigrant....
-
It's the stats time of the year.
*Yawns*
-
I made up with really handy receipt on the phone. If someone wants a receipt, I change the dates and figures, and email it to them or send it by text. It look all legit like a MyTaxi passenger one.

But it won’t have your registration number, license number, distance travelled etc etc you’re a Limo so we don’t give a fuck
-
I include all those details, but that regardless of whether I'm a limo or not.

I had an Italian cnut few months ago waitin for 20cent change from 10 note.... 9.80 fare.....
Ide normally hand the 20 cent but I just wanted to see would he ask for it.....
An he fukin did......
Them cnuts are nearly as bad as northerners scum..... Only yu can nearly spot the Italian but some times yu get a Spaniards an them cnuts give yu a load coins from their woman's purse they have strapped around their waste like the 40 euro or so they have init is their life savings....
I dont pick any them cnuts anymore I just say fuk off to them wen they have their hand out..... But the northern cnut is harder to spot....
You can usually spot them....
They either incredibly skinny cause they too mean to eat..... Or a big fat bastard cause their a greedy b.......d.
You can also see a purple glow on the ground around them like a shadow.... That's the evil ectoplasm seeping from their arse....
And the smell of cow shite and diesel and chemicals off them wud burn the hairs of your nostrils.....
Smelly cnuts

Rules and regulations,
It's against the law to have a on/off switch on your receipt printer, doesn't make sense,
One person asked me for a receipt over the Christmas, At night,
No one is interested in taking receipts,
So the receipt machine continuous to spew out rolls of paper
If they asked for a receipt no problem,
But don't throw them on the floor of the car.
-
Cash registers in shops, petrol stations have the option to not print a receipt unless otherwise asked by the customer,i always make it my business to issue one although some people just exit and don't wait around for the receipt to print.
-
I'm sure the NTA would be open to adjusting the rules but at the same time might try to make accepting cards compulsory.Sound great now but when ya meet yer accountant yis might be getting a shock.

Surely the card reader thingys are too unreliable to make compulsory???
I've yet to have mytaxi paybymytaxi work at the airport either
-
Black cabbies in London are supposed to have card readers since a few years ago. They agreed to it as a method to combat Uber.If its in the taxi regs they can fine ya for not having it working just like the meter.Mine is pretty reliable even though I'll say its broken sometimes.
Wasn't there someone in the paper from the Irish hotel federation or something asking for the rules to be changed to force us to take cards. We've another few years at most before the game is up.The NTA never give anything away without expecting something back.
Just to clarify Payby Mytaxi is shite but my Sumup works everytime.
-
What happens when it doesn't work, though. Who takes the hit?
If NTA make it compulsory they should provide a failover facility, perhaps via Telephone or SMS.

I nearly had a heart attack the first time MyTaxi didn't process a fare for me - it was for e30. (We swapped details etc) Thinking it was a bad signal, I drove away to a better spot and restarted the phone maybe 20mins after the guy had gotten out of the taxi. MyTaxi started up and remembered the details. I swiped etc and the payment processed. Longest 5 mins of my life :(
It's happened to me 3 or 4 times since then. Go to a stronger signal area, restart the phone and MT remembers. It must cache the details on the server or sumting?
It's not ideal but restarting the phone seems to help. Presumably wouldn't work if the person wanted to switch from cash to card and had to authorize payment via their phone.
(I have a reasonably good phone - 4Gb Ram, 64Gb memory, strong 3G signal. Never any problems with Google maps or Youtube)
-
The system is pretty shit at times. 4GB Ram is shite these days and as for 3G... so 2015!
-
If you left the meter running for the time it takes to process a Pay with Mytaxi fare...you could earn another few euro in waiting time.
-
To much fucking around with the card shite for me,
Sorry don't have a card reader Bud,
Kash is King,

Yet you have a card to pick up your pension?
Methinks the fool doth protest too much.
If your declared earnings exceed circa €150, does it result inn a reduced pension?

When you get to the airport, make sure your WiFi is off otherwise it’ll try connect to the airport WiFi. Try that.
I’ve never had a problem processing a card at the airport
-
I've never had a problem at the airport - bit slow sometimess. Usually it's the 'periphery' of the city like Blanch or East Point Biz Park.
-
My theory is it goes by how many other passengers with Mytaxi apps are around yer vicinity.Your phone is trying to ping off other mobiles even if they're not using the passenger app.Thr system can't figure out that the customer your trying to find is one on the back seat.

Card payments could interfere with No class' pension.
-
The contributory pension isn't means tested so why would earnings impact on it... and what difference does it make whether the earnings are cash or card?

Declare 70K a year and you will be tested.
Card payments are verifiable.
-
Everything that comes through mytaxi is verifiable but I'm sure men don't only declare what they believe is verifiable.... If it's based on contributions it shouldn't be means tested... it is, however, taxable as is your private pension.
-
73 y/o mate won't use the app for fear of exposure.
He has his pension.
His bean counter said if he earns over 150 a week on top of the pension they'll notice.
When you lose the pension cos the earnings are too high, it's hard to get it back.
His words, not mine.
-
I don't think you lose it but it is taxable so I'd imagine his accountant's observations are based on how much tax he'd pay.

Pension is guaranteed, earnings not so much.

The State Pension (Contributory) is paid to people from the age of 66 who have enough Irish social insurance contributions. It is not means-tested. You can have other income and still get a State Pension (Contributory). This pension is taxable but you are unlikely to pay tax if it is your only income.
As the social insurance conditions are very complex you should apply for a State Pension (Contributory) if you have ever worked and have any contributions (stamps) paid at any time. There are a number of pro-rata pensions available to people who paid different types of social insurance contributions or who did not pay contributions because of various reasons (see below).
If you retire early, you should ensure that you continue to pay PRSI contributions or get credited contributions (if eligible) to maintain your entitlement to a pension. If you are getting Jobseeker's Benefit (JB) and are aged between 65 and 66 when your JB would normally end, you may continue to receive it until the age of 66, provided you meet the PRSI requirements.
The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) has published FAQs on Qualifying for the State Pension (Contributory) which can help you to work out whether you qualify for a State Pension (Contributory).
The means-tested State Pension (Non-Contributory) is a payment for people aged over 66 who do not qualify for a State Pension (Contributory) or who only qualify for a reduced contributory pension based on their insurance record.
This pension is taxable but you are unlikely to pay tax if it is your only income
