Latest Android version of the driver app is built on the Google Navigation API which means in app navigation is greatly improved with directions at the top of the screen just like Uber. To keep it on screen turn off Navigation Auto Start (Settings -> Navigation).
Not yet accessible through Android Auto, no doubt that will follow in due course.
