M50 traffic management
« on: May 16, 2018, 10:23:44 am »
Transport Infrastructure Ireland another think tank set up by the goverment to supply jobs for their mates are due to present a report today on the M50 .They want the Minister to introduce  random variable speed legislation in Ireland .At the moment Ireland only operates fixed speed limits on roads unlike GB where if its foggy or there is an accident then overhead speed limits get flashed up on overhead gantries or roadside signs to alert drivers of a change in speed limits .They also report that the M50is not fit for purpose and that traffic has now expanded to exceed even the limits they invisaged when they widened the carrigeways and they are suggesting to reduce traffic and encourage drivers to use orbital routesThe Minister should consider the introduction of multiple tolling on the M50 then the conterdict their logic by suggestion that a congestion charge should be considered for the City to reduce private car use .These proposals will be included in the Transport for Ireland Bill 2017/2027 which will be piblished soon

So they built m50 to alleviate the traffic congestion in the city..........
An now they want to put multiple tolling to take the traffic off the M50.....  :o

Am I umconfused yet?

You are confused Occy They never built the M50 to alieviate traffic the built it with Tolls in mind so well used Motorways in Dublin and surrounding counties could subsidise boreens in far far down the country its just another tax on motorists .Then trow in a City congestion charge that forces people to use alternatives like Bus .Trail Luas bike or walk. The more people on public transport the less subsidies the government have to pay .The idea is to make roads and transport in general self financing .Thats why there are contradictions in the policy the result is self financing  controled congestion and gridlock are marketing tools .It will be good for us as Bus and Rail fares will go up when there are limited alternatives .

Variable speed limits are a good idea. Modern technology can readily determine optimum maximum speeds required to minimise emissions, start/stop, journey times, etc. The brits also deploy "safety cars" on the M25 when they really want to reduce speed e.g. to slow flow towards an incident.

Should be speed cameras every 4 furlongs on motorways. With modern technology it's perfectly feasible.
