So if ya get locked up do ya still have to pay the 200k in penalties?

Imagine doing two years in the joy then having to sell yer gaff to live in a bedsit smaller than yer old cell on the NCR.

If it's a Debt, then it is still owed after his release.
If it's a Fine, then that is cleared after his first day of imprisonment.

The fines act 2010...c/o Irish Penal Reform Trust. Fines now collectable by An Post...same applies to new Dogs Act too...get your licence here etc...

Under the act:

Fines will be set at a level that takes into account the person’s finances;
All fines over €100 can be paid by instalments;
If the person fails, the judge can consider a wage attachment order, a recovery order or a community service order.
Ms Fitzgerald said imprisonment will only apply where these orders are not appropriate or where a community service order was not complied with.

The Courts Service said “staged payments, or installments, will help a person to meet their obligations and be facilitated in post offices nationwide from Friday”.

The Irish Penal Reform Trust’s Deirdre Malone said: “This is a victory for common sense: imprisoning people for failure to pay court ordered fines is not only socially damaging, it creates an illogical and additional burden on an already strained prison system.”

He was due to pay almost €100,000 in income tax and now owes a further €200,000 in penalties and fees. He had a €100,000 cheque in court to pay the overdue tax.

I don't know where he stands on the penalties and fees ?
He has paid his tax debt of €100,000, but are the penalties and fees considered as a debt or a fine ?

If you listen back to the interview with Uimmy Gueran,he is trying to give the immpression yer man was singled out because he was a foreigner ,without actaully saying it

Probably true. I'd say most doctors are screwing the taxman, it wouldn't be worth their while earning the kinda money they earn if they had to let Govt squander most of it. Maybe they should start a Union, maybe call it Doctors For Change and arrange a meeting with the taxman to tell him they're all screwing the State?

To be fair to the man in question, he didn't go to great lengths to hide his undeclared income, the wife's account and another "secret" account within the State... all very detectible. Maybe they suspect what was found is only the tip of the iceberg and the real money is lodged out of reach of the free State, perhaps up above in Non Iron or over on the mainland?
Both xould be accused of representing Drug dealers.
