Brought my Octaviaseses (09 diesel MKII and oh16 diesel MKIII) for the National car test last Wednesday evening. Both given a clean bill of health but I didn't have to sign a disclaimer for the MKIII. Do they not have to rev up the newer diesels or what? Is that how they've reduced the emissions readings on the reports?

The emissions on the MKIII rose to 0.030 from 0.000 last year. The limit is 0.700 and I've never put anything other than diesel in the fuel system so I'm not concerned about that. The MKI read 0.95 (limit 1.50) and that's never had anything other than diesel in the fuel system and never failed the test, at least not since I took ownership of it in January 2014.

I'm not bothered about the emissions, they're well within limits without all those remedies. Driving home on the motorway is probably sufficient in that regard.

What I was wondering is how comparable the old figures are with the new figures. Are the lower readings just because they don't rev the fuck out of newer cars?... the clue being the requirement to sign the timing belt waiver for the oh9 but not for the oh16.

Maybe they just forgot because you brought 2 cars at the same time.  Maybe the disclaimer form had both registration numbers on it?  The manual above seems to suggest all diesel cars (after Jan 1980) get tested?


Interesting about the limits you mention in your 1st post.  My 07 Octavia is on the 6month NCT cycle.  The limit on my NCT report sheets was 3.0 in Feb and 2.5 in August.  Got 1.9 at the start of the year and 1-ish in Aug.

I didn't present both sets of documents, Watty. It was actually a romantic evening out with Mrs. Catcher who looked after the oh9 which is hers these days. I didn't notice them rev the oh16 but I did hear the oh9 being revved, although I may have missed the revving of the oh16. I'll have to pay more attention next year and see if a disclaimer is required then.

Yours must be a MKI, the limit was 3.0 for my old MKI which I had from new, that never failed on emissions either, even when it had a sticking valve... and it never got any revving prior to testing or anything other than diesel in the tank. I think the MKII has always had a limit of 1.5 and has always measured close enough to 1.0. I could look that up but I haven't time atm.
