Hero off duty garda tackles thieves in middle of crime spree in Co Meath

Gardai are looking to speak to a woman who recorded the incident on her mobile phone

A hero off-duty garda confronted a number of thieves who were attempting to steal from a store in Co. Meath.

The crooks were in the middle of a theft in Supervalu, Ratoath on Wednesday evening just minutes after they had carried out a robbery in the nearby Tesco Express.

The gutsy female garda confronted the culprits who resisted arrest and managed to make their escape.

Gardai in Ashbourne said they believe the thieves were taken from the scene in a vehicle and are seeking witnesses to the incident.

A garda spokesman said: "Investigating Gardai are aware that at least one member of the public stood and recorded this incident on her phone whilst the off duty member was struggling to prevent this theft.

"Gardai would be anxious to speak with this lady and any other persons who may be able to assist the investigation."

Witnesses are asked to call the Gardai at Ashbourne on 01-8010600.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

It always seems to be off-duty guards in these stories.  Maybe they should pay Guards to stay at home - the crime rates would plummet!

No danger of the chipper being held up when they're on duty.
