I'm no big fan of the multi national bookies but to be fair to them when Frankie Dettori went through the card at Ascot back in the Nineties Ladbrokes waived their 250,000 payout limit and paid out all punters in full. As also did Betfair sportsbook last week when they waived their right to a 250,000 limit on the Envoi Allen accumulator.

All great PR Ken --couldn't pay for publicity Barry Orr got for them(Betfair) last week ,try taking them on when horse disq  under rules of racing as they bet on the exchange yet when it  gets reinstated by Turf Club --for only a couple of grand best offer a  refund of stake !
Likewise on a football match when a team disq for playing unqualified player my Son told FU--

No difference when a punter on here was big on a short priced one ante post but because of cross markets cant cash out on "day of race "market--only when it suits ,not like in Cashmans Day when if you laid a bet you paid it --unfortunately I played by similar rules ,if you were caught you were caught--that's why we are skint eh !

Has to be mileage in it for them !

Firstly, thanks fer the compliment Punter.

I wrote most of the rules in the rule book fer my old company and I tried to be as fair as possible about it with no hidden clauses or small print.

The most challenged rule was always the Tattersalls rule 4 deductions but if a client really got the hump and called to see me in HQ then if he was anyway polite then I would meet him half way.

The second most challenged rule was the determination of the winner, I tried to keep it simple, fer horse racing the weigh-in is the end result, fer field sport the final whistle is the end result, fer other sports the presentation of medals is the final result. Otherwise you could be going around in circles fer years.

To take the Aga Khans Aliysa who won the Epsom Oaks in 1989, disqualified 17 months later, or all the olympic or cycling winners who were later disqualified, there has to be a cut off point where there is just One winner.

Here is a story fer the old timer punters on here, forgive me if the dates and names are incorrect but you will get the jist of it.

Back in the day all the bookies had fer tills were the old Anker F7's which were a work horse of a till.

But all it printed on the docket was the day and month, shop code ("7" fer the Maylor street branch) and docket number, which did a fine job fer many years. The 2 or 3 tills numbers were in different ink colours ranged from Zero to 9999, which would turn over every 2 or 3 weeks or so.

Then Greece won the Eurovision song contest in circa 2005 and a fella walks in to the Maylor street branch the next day and slaps his docket on the counter; 10 Euro, Greece, Eurovision @ 6/1.
The docket was in perfect condition and had been stamped the day before on the Blue till, the docket number was circa 7000 but the Blue till numbers on that day were circa 2000, then the manager checked the Black till and the numbers were in the 9000's, everyone is scratching their heads as the date and shop code matched but totally impossible to have a 7000 till number on that day.
Then the manager got a brainwave and checked back on the old pay-out books, Two years earlier the 7000 Blue till docket numbers would have matched, by the time he found out about the Con and went to confront yer-man-o he was long gone.

The bet had been placed in 2003 but he held on to the docket till Greece won in 2005 as there was no year printed on the docket.

100% true... and Boylesports (referred to as Spoilsports on betting fora) are generally the first to close unprofitable accounts. I'm banned from all sports, on their platform, and have been for a number of years. That €25,000 pay out has already been recouped in publicity. Obviously, it's much harder to prevent the odd long-shot multiple win than to prevent persistent smaller returns. Losing €25k to one lucky punter makes a lot more sense (from their perspective) than losing €50/year to each of 50 punters for ten years. Said 50 punters are, of course, readily identifiable and easily excluded... and it's all allowed under the terms of their licences issued in Malta or Gibraltar.

Back in late Seventies I worked as bag-man counting and paying out cash to customers on the dog track fer a bookie, we call him 'Joe'. The tote on the dog track introduced a new bet called the Jackpot where you had to pick the 4 winners from races 4 to 7. Joe became very interested when he heard the nightly dividends being announced.

So Joe cooked up a plan and before racing only on Sat nights when the pool was large himself and 3 cronies (all professional gamblers) would meet up and go through the races and pick out their selections in a large perm (usually about £500), I was included fer a similar stake to all as I was the one who had to place the bet and usually cash it in and divide the winnings, we did well, very well fer a long time as long as the 4 fav's didn't win.

Joe the bookie went on to sponsor a major event at the dog track and to boost a bit of PR he guaranteed the tote jackpot pool fer 5K every night that his competition was racing.
This was all in the late Seventies and the usual jackpot pool would be about 2 or 3K, so Joe was going to have to stump up a few grand per night to make up the difference.

But Joe had other ideas and on the first night that the Jackpot was to be guaranteed there was an informal meeting of the syndicate and Joe explained how he was going to go large on the jackpot because he was the one guaranteeing it and he might as well have it on in live dockets than just pay up the difference in dead money.

Joe took a 50% stake and the remaining 4 of us took 12.5% each in the circa 2.5K jackpot perm, without fail we got it up every single night even though some nights the dividend was poor and we took a loss. The pool was never below 5K so Joe never had to stump up the guarantee money.

Of all the many strokes and knacks we pulled in the gambling game and there were lots, the only one that I feel guilty about was done by me to a football coupon punter.
The coupon was staked as £40 and the cashier just stamped it as so and took the money fer it.

On the coupon 4 draws were marked with an X and the word "Trebles" written beside it, I settled the coupon myself on the Sunday, all 4 draws had come in and even though the word Trebles was marked on it, the rule book states that any Double with 3 selections is settled as a Treble, Etc, Etc. So I settled it as a £40 Quad @ 110/1 returning £4,440.

Monday morning 9.30am and the assistant managing director of the company walks in and asks me; "Do you have a football coupon marked Trebles with 4 draws on it ?", I tell him that I have and he sez; "Well coincidence of all coincidence I was talking to a fella in the pub last night and he told me that he had messed up his coupon and left out the words "4 X £10" on his Trebles draw bet".

So the coupon was resettled as 4 X £10 Trebles @ 33/1 each to return £1,360.
