It wasn't that long ago we were up in the Phoenix Park for a Candlelit vigil remembering drivers who took their own lives:
TAXI drivers gathered at Áras an Uachtaráin last night to hold a silent vigil to remember the high number of drivers who have taken their own lives in light of the recession.
Organisers of the vigil estimate that up 25 drivers have committed suicide in the last two years due to the economic pressure which has mounted upon them.

Organiser Lisa Corr said there had been two notable clusters of suicides, the first last August and then again last week.

She said some of those who died were well known around Dublin.

"These deaths have upset the industry an awful lot," she said. "The recession has hit everyone across the country but there are too many cars on the roads and that is hitting our industry hard.

"There are 11,000 drivers in Dublin now. That is more than in New York for the population," she said.

Taxi unions have been calling for some time for the industry regulator to put a cap on the number of licenses being issued so that drivers can find it easier to make a living.

John Usher from the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation, who said he was aware of nine suicides amongst taxi men in the last year, said a lot of drivers had seen their cars or houses re-possessed.

Last night’s silent candlelight vigil was addressed by representatives from suicide support organisation Console.

Organisers said they hoped their action would draw the Government’s attention to the tragedies which the industry had suffered.

Anyone who needs support should contact Console’s 1Life suicide helpline on 1800 247100.

FN don't realise or else don't give a bollicks about

Plenty of drivers are day drivers and don't qualify for any bonuses

Not all night drivers work long enough to do 15 jobs or 15 jobs for just one app to get a bonus

A lot of drivers don't want their cars destroyed by FN multi coloured stickers making their cars look like a joke in their driveway.

There are other rival apps and some of the Taxi phone companies still exist and most people can still hail off the streets so hence not all the jobs on their platform are covered but do get covered elsewhere.

Boiling drivers pi$$ by showing them a job right beside them for a millisecond only to give it to a stickered car probably 10 minutes away and then offering the same driver jobs 20 minutes away from them.

FN should introduce surge pricing and, ideally, share at least some of the surcharges with drivers as bonuses.

They've already god rid of most of our tips with their poxy 1 Euro surcharge which makes a tip unlikely where it was commonplace.  ::fds ::fds

Because I only used to use the one App I was always a "Gold star" driver apparently. Now I have two Apps I rarely pass bronze status.

I've noticed quite an increase in people using BOLT as against FN. After the FN quest ended I had 2/10 jobs completed.

True Marky....always amazes me how quick those airport jobs get whipped off the screen, they have to be sitting around obviously have themselves busy....personally I'd rather do multiple short hops than tie myself up waiting for 29mins on a job that'll bring you to a place where there's hundreds of other taxi's with little hope of getting a fare out of there....unless it's an Uber....you'll always get a job within a very short time if you do a fare to the airport with them.

Not sure what yisser expect or are used to earning these days but the last time I dipped into Free Now I found myself faced with paying in excess of €7.50/hour freight... and that's only working a quarter of a county only taking work from residential addresses.

Fifty an hour gross isn't worth a bollix if yer mechanic is charging you more than fifty an hour to fix your four wheeled money pit.

This needs to be said in case any new entrants are looking in and being misled.

I guess my point is that my experience differs somewhat from MMWs and, as previously stated, I don't cover prebookings, airport pick ups or any pub/hotel work. Given that I rarely (if ever) have priority and I'm not an ambassador it's safe to assume my freight/earnings is very much at the lower end of the scale. There must be a large fortune to be had off street work but I don't come across much of it on my watch.
