An investigation is under way after a man has died after being shot by gardaí in west Dublin.
The incident happened at around 12.35pm in the Manorfield Drive area, near the Dublin/Meath border.
Gardaí had been called to the scene following reports of a man armed with a knife at a shop in Hartstown.
It is understood the man had threatened staff at a shop.
The man, who was in his late 20s, is believed to have then fled from the shop, threatening uniformed gardaí with a knife as he made his way home a short distance away at Manorfield Drive.
Around a dozen gardaí were present at the scene, including members of the Armed Support Unit, and gardaí say they were also threatened with a knife.
They implemented what gardaí call a graduated policing response.
This is where the use of less-than-lethal force options are initially administered in an effort to resolve an incident.
Gardaí say the less-than-lethal use of force options were unsuccessful, and a number of shots were fired from an official Garda firearm at around 12.35pm.
The man was treated at the scene by Armed Support Unit paramedics and Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics.
He was transferred to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown where he has pronounced dead this afternoon.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission have been notified of the incident and are currently in attendance at the scene.
Investigations are ongoing.

we weren't there so we cant really say if the guards were right or not to shoot him. It isn't America though so I trust them to make the right decision, I doubt they would shoot without good reason. They have to shoot at the body apparently, shooting at legs is just too hard.

Can't say I disagree with you, Octy. Something needs to be done about youths running riot. I was only reading about a pair of teens attacking women in Fairview with an axe and a knife only for Clontarf's finest to conclude that there's nothing to see there. Ifn they were black kids they'd be riddled with bullets, that's half the problem, I guess.

I read the news reports and watched the videos on here, it did seem a bit harsh, granted he was West Dooblin scum and prob deserved all he got, but I'm wondering had it been the son of a wealthy family from Dort 4 or a coloured person would they have shot at him 5 times ?
I think any decent half trained martial arts Guard (of whom there is many) armed with just a hurley could have brought this man down, but still it is one less scum bag on the streets.

In a broadly similar incident up above in Dublin a white (Irish by accident of birth) man was fined €25 after being arrested by a single garda who he attacked with a much larger knife. The 25 or whatever Gardai who attended the Clonee incident clearly set out to use the mentally challenged immigrant for target practice... nothing more than a lynch mod controlled by a loyalist terrorist. They're all very brave when there's dozens of them pointing guns at simpletons and folk with mortgage arrears... put 'em up against proper gangsters who'll shoot back and all they can do is shit themselves and run.

Delusional isn't the word for it. They're brave when there's 20+ of them dressed up like loyalist terrorists frog marching women and children out of their houses at gunpoint for being a fiver behind on the mortgage or shoving guns in the faces of law abiding motorists at checkpoints up above in Dublin. Very few of my interractions with the Gardai, have impressed me. Most of the civilised rules, by which they are supposed to abide, have had to be forced on them in the courts or by the EU. They have huge powers, and must be very strictly regulated.

Off the top of my head, all reported knife attacks on taxi drivers over the last year or so - c.3 in West Dublin and 1 in Rathmines or Inchicore or Harolds X - were carried out by white Irish by accident of birth "perps". Where were the Gardai when those men needed protecting from what Octy thinks is black culture? What investigations were carried out? How many "perps" shot or even brought before the courts? A 27-year-old man has been arrested after a football fan was left with a life-changing injury to his face during brawls between Millwall and Everton supporters.
Police called the scenes "absolutely shocking" as fighting broke out between groups of fans before and after an FA Cup clash on January 26.
The injured Everton supporter posted a picture on social media showing a long scar down the right side of his face.
Detective Sergeant Matt Simpson, from the Metropolitan Police Public Order Investigation Team, said: "The disorder which we witnessed was absolutely shocking. It involved dozens of people and lasted for a number of hours.
"We are carrying out a large-scale investigation into the disorder, which left at least one person with a serious injury.
"We have hours of CCTV and hundreds of images which we are closely reviewing, and we have a team of experts working to identify those involved."
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of wounding with intent, attempted grievous bodily harm, and violent disorder and bailed until February 28.

He, and one of the other gardai ar now dead, but none sued for libel, and only one went on radio to deny the allegations.

The Republicans up north hit a few of Harris' men when he was directing shoot to kill operations and suppressing enquiries in those parts and there's a big difference here. Ask some Gardai on the street what they think of him... maybe start in Dundalk! It was a political appointment, obviously picked for his experience in cover ups, corruption within the force was a big deal back then what with that grass that turned on them anall.
