Why is the Angelus broadcast at 19:00 on RET One + 1? Surely it should be at 12:00 and 18:00 on every channel. I'm sure men who prefer a later news bulletin still pause for prayer at the prescribed times.
-
I try to catch it twice...i like reflecting on my day...twice!!
-
Thats a good question....Like why do I have to pay 160e a year to a Sectarian Organization called RTE who insist on ringing prayer bells at 12AM and 6PM for Roman Catholics....Bit like sectarian Tunisia who drove me crazy with their Muslim prayer chants from speakers at 6AM... 7Am..1PM and 4Pm..and 6PM every day...

Those times sound good if you're on a course of antibiotics.....in Tunisia!!

By 18:01 you will have been afforded two opportunities for reflection, Hal. As a Roman Catholic call to prayer it's timing are quite specific and, IMO, shouldn't be repeated willy nilly. There is, of course, a case for including calls to prayer for other organised religions bearing in mind the considerable surge in the practice of Islam across Ireland in recent times.

Over my dead body ............
an probably many others wen they start blown themselves up :-X

To be fair, they'd have to do a whole lotta blowing up to catch up with us Catholics and them filthy, stinking Protestants. Today's Ireland isn't the slave to the Roman Catholic Church that it once was. On the contrary, while Catholic churches are being closed down due to lack of interest Mosques are being constructed. Followers of Islam deserve equal recognition from the State broadcaster, they pay licence fees too. I'm not suggesting that we should force our women to cover their faces in public or close down all the pubs or anything like that but it is important that we recognise the fact that their faith is at least as important to them as ours is to us.
-
I'm just looking for an excuse ..not to have to pay 160 e to RTE..
-
I might have one for your consideration... I don't think TV licence inspectors are working on account of COVID '19 and, AFAIK, you can't be prosecuted for not paying unless an inspector calls to the relevant address... so you could ignore it for the time being and buy one in another name when we progress to the new normal. BTW, I change the name on mine most years - after skipping 2-3 months - and they've never chased or alleged arrears.
-
I get a letter of intent to prosecute ...or to declare that I no longer need a licence...Its a official letter sent when 2 months overdue !
-
That's interesting. Mine expired last October and I filed the last letter they sent in the green bin without opening it. The name it's in doesn't correspond with anyone living in my gaff anyway so I'm not sure how they'd serve a summons and/or prosecute. I must open the next one, I guess!
I trust you declared that you no longer need a licence?
-
Hear... is the licence not free at your age, CB?
-
I think it's over 70s...wont be long

Centuries to get rid of catholic mafia Italian oppression....an now yu want us to allow some alien cult from south arabia ???.....the mind boggles .....
Kids are all learnin bout all these foreign religions one minute ....then ther learnin bout teranasaurus rex the next minute ..are yu tryin confuse the poor cnuts ::fds

Well that excuse....won't be long.
-
I thought you said you're 70, CB... anyway, hold out if you're close enough. The letter could be a bluff... If I had a pound for every solicitors letter I've received threatening legal action I'd have a fair few pounds yet I've never been summonsed... except that time I cycled the wrong way down a one way street at night with no lights on my bicycle and that time it was alleged that I ignored a traffic signal... oh, and that time the baldy cunt from Malahide didn't show up twice after charging me with insufficient thread depth on a tyre, illegible fare card, breaking a red light and something else that escapes me right now...

Islam isn't an alien cult, it's a religion that's becoming increasing popular on these shores. It may well be the most practiced religion in the country given that vast numbers who declare themselves to be Roman Catholic are "non-practising". Given that RTE devotes time to a dying religion it ought to devote relative time to a growing one.
-
Why not drop both, I don't see any announcements about the tooth fairy, for whom there is as much evidence or lack thereof?
-
There is a reasonable argument for dropping the Angelus on the grounds that it's not as relevant to peoples' lives as it may once have been. However, RTE has a public service remit so ought to cater for religious beliefs, particularly during the COVID '19 pandemic during which people can't gather to worship. The importance of religion to many people cannot be overstated. Maybe there should be a dedicated channel to broadcast Catholic mass, Protestant mass and Islamic calls to prayer?

I'm not saying they'll definitely get rid of the bells, but I have a hunch. 8)

Sacre Bleu......or is that Notre Dame?
-
Dont forget the live mass at 10.30 AM every morning on RTE...Church and State and wishey washey followers...still believe that they are the one and only true religion....
-
They can turn on al Jazeera or some shite an talk to ther fantasyland in the clouds santi claus for grown ups .....Islam is a cult ....a very dangerous one ....it should be outlawed as a racist cult ideology that pertains to the notion that non believers are the enemy.....how many Buddhists have flown planes into buildings? Yu dont see Hindus forming armies and going across vast areas of the middle east cutting heads off and beheading and persecuting woman an non believers .....
That brainwashing zombie shit needs to be cut out of the world like a cancer ......you want to cater for racist violent extremism on the war path who's so called religion compels them to spread their gospel on the rest of us an if we dont accept ther " god " we are target ?
-
Well Octy ..I think we have to differ there...I do detest Muslim extremists who blow up innocent humans in a
ALLAH s name..I also detest the nuns who threw innocent human babies into a cesspool pit and priests who raped innocent little boys.I could not accept being associated with any religions that brush over the way that some of its members behave........BTW I have put up a lovely link to Van G painting have a look if you get the time ::cheers

Without much personal knowledge of the situation, I would speculate that the army were always in control, hence the Rohingya killings, and expatriation.

Absolutely Bob. Aung San Suu Kyi was powerless in helping the Rohingya. A figurehead for optics only.

She was never gonna effect change, she'd have better off being kept a prisoner of her home or leave Myanmar and have her voice heard running a campaign from the safety of Bonos chateau in the south of France,it might be true that she's not directly responsible for the action of the military but the "optics" are such that she has linked herself to it...and maybe there's a link somewhere where she condemns it....but i don't think she ever has.
