The Angelus
« on: February 05, 2021, 07:49:41 pm »
Why is the Angelus broadcast at 19:00 on RET One + 1? Surely it should be at 12:00 and 18:00 on every channel. I'm sure men who prefer a later news bulletin still pause for prayer at the prescribed times.

Thats a good question....Like why do I have to pay 160e a year to a Sectarian Organization called RTE who insist on ringing prayer bells at 12AM and 6PM for Roman Catholics....Bit like sectarian Tunisia who drove me crazy with their Muslim prayer chants from speakers at 6AM... 7Am..1PM and 4Pm..and 6PM every day...

By 18:01 you will have been afforded two opportunities for reflection, Hal. As a Roman Catholic call to prayer it's timing are quite specific and, IMO, shouldn't be repeated willy nilly. There is, of course, a case for including calls to prayer for other organised religions bearing in mind the considerable surge in the practice of Islam across Ireland in recent times.

To be fair, they'd have to do a whole lotta blowing up to catch up with us Catholics and them filthy, stinking Protestants. Today's Ireland isn't the slave to the Roman Catholic Church that it once was. On the contrary, while Catholic churches are being closed down due to lack of interest Mosques are being constructed. Followers of Islam deserve equal recognition from the State broadcaster, they pay licence fees too. I'm not suggesting that we should force our women to cover their faces in public or close down all the pubs or anything like that but it is important that we recognise the fact that their faith is at least as important to them as ours is to us.

I might have one for your consideration... I don't think TV licence inspectors are working on account of COVID '19 and, AFAIK, you can't be prosecuted for not paying unless an inspector calls to the relevant address... so you could ignore it for the time being and buy one in another name when we progress to the new normal. BTW, I change the name on mine most years - after skipping 2-3 months - and they've never chased or alleged arrears.

That's interesting. Mine expired last October and I filed the last letter they sent in the green bin without opening it. The name it's in doesn't correspond with anyone living in my gaff anyway so I'm not sure how they'd serve a summons and/or prosecute. I must open the next one, I guess!

I trust you declared that you no longer need a licence?
