A number of men with dogs, sticks and a baseball bat attacked a migrant camp in Ashtown, north Dublin, on Saturday.
The group of men arrived at about 12.45pm at the encampment, comprised of about 15 tents in a forest area, on the bank of the Tolka river on River Road, near the Ashtown pound.
They shouted, “Get out. Get out” and “Pack up and get out now. Now.” Four had dogs, including a German shepherd and an American pit-bull terrier. One wore a black balaclava, while another carried a baseball bat and allegedly used it to assault a young Polish man who has been camping at the site since last year.
When interrupted by The Irish Times and asked why they were attacking the camp, the men – all white, Irish – alleged the residents had been involved in an assault locally.

Between six and eight men – Polish, Croatian, Hungarian, Portuguese, Indian and Scottish – have been living at the camp since August, without incident they say. In recent days, however, video footage of the camp has circulated on social media, with one posting video on Twitter, saying: “It’s like a little village. They say they’re Irish? They’re not f**king Irish.”

A similar video posted on Facebook on Wednesday has comments underneath including: “Come down. My dog ready to go”; “Bottle of petrol and that’s it good luck”, and, “They need to be transported to Dalkey!”.
Gardaí arrived at the camp shortly after the men and dogs left, and spoke to those living there. One, a Polish man (20) told The Irish Times he had been hit several times with a baseball bat. Visibly distressed, he said his arm was not broken. “I have strong bones, but the tendons are sore”.
Another man in his 30s, from Portugal, said they would leave the camp and most of their belongings and go to the city centre.
“This is serious. They mean business. We will just have to pack up and go, that’s it and not come back here. I will bring my documents and my bags and that’s all I need. It’s going to get worse if we stay,” he said.
A third man, from Hungary, was angry. Rolling a cigarette, he said he didn’t know how to feel after the attack.
“I came to this country to work. I became homeless because I got f**ked over. This is the last thing we want, to be homeless. We are here in this place seven months, very peaceful. Nobody notice we are here and then somebody puts up something.
“I would really gladly go back to my own country but this country owes me a bit of money. I like Irish people but when they start being racist, I cannot take it. That was scary. I never experienced anything like that, never.”
An Indian man (30), who had spoken to The Irish Times earlier about how he had come to live at the camp, would not speak after the incident. He dismantled his tent in silence and packed up his belongings.

Before the attack the men showed The Irish Times around the camp and explained how they had come to be living here. The Indian man said he had arrived in Ireland in April to work as a cook. His initial job fell through and he couldn’t keep up the €550 a month he was paying to share a room. He became homeless in June and was sleeping rough. Since then, he got work for 25 hours a week serving food in a well-known tech company – a job he has held since.
The Portuguese man has been in Ireland two years, and lost his job in a city centre hotel after telling a “funny joke” to a Brazilian customer who, he says, reported him to his manager.
“I have been in Ireland two years. I was living in Cabra and I couldn’t pay the rent. When I was homeless first I hadn’t a clue how to get help. I was staying in a sleeping bag in Smithfield and then some people gave me information about where to get food.
“Then I met these fellas and we decided to come to this place because we thought it would be more peaceful.”

The men lived here without electricity, toilets, running water or cooking facilities. They had fashioned shelter from tarpaulin sheeting, and one had built a shelter with wooden pallets. Each had a tent to sleep in and stored belongings in several more.
They said gardaí checked on them regularly, while rough-sleeper outreach teams brought food, sleeping bags and advice. They charged phones, washed clothes and showered in city-centre charities, including the Lighthouse, Mendicity Institution and the Capuchin Day Centre.
On Saturday afternoon they abandoned the camp. They did not know where they would sleep and were reluctant to go to hostels. The Hungarian man showed a large scar on his neck he said he had got in a hostel when “someone tried to murder” him.
“I didn’t come to Ireland for this situation,” the Portuguese man said. “I want better and when things get to this, we don’t want things to escalate. Portuguese people are very peaceful. We don’t want to fight with Irish people.”
A Garda spokesman confirmed there had been an “incident on River Road. Gardaí responded quickly and engaged with those present. There was no report of any injuries and no formal complaints made at this time.”

Let me explain .If the Irish State built half a million Social houses tomorrow .Who can apply ?The answer is EVERY EUROPEAN CITIZEN or refugee with permission to remain .That is over 500 Million applicants .The Irish State cannot give preferential treatment to Irish citizens over other EU Citizens .So the Solution to the HOMELESS CRISIS is for the State to build NO homes and rely on Private Capital that removes the responsibility from the State .By having a lack of housing it acts as a barrier to immigration ,saving the State Billions on Schools ,Hospitals and welfare .more than 80% of immigrants who gain Irish Passports immigrate to the UK as we can still work or live in the UK even though they are no longer in the EU under the Good Friday Agreement .

Had another educated young irish woman in me car saying she's emigrating to Australia because her and her boyfriend have no future in ireland..... no prospect of home ownership and cant save because of the rent ...meanwhile several irish politicians with multiple properties and their cronies with hotels and hostel continue to profit from ever increasing rent increases .....and the government allowing whole apartment blocks to be sold to foreign banks ..who are profiting from the slaughter aswell .....hotels stuffing roma gypsies and alleged asylum seekers into them at the tax payers expense and giving them free housing as in the case of aisling Murphys killer .....all given medical cards and schooling on an already crippled health and education system ...

It's just over 20 years since Ireland experienced an animal disease called foot and mouth disease. The Government sent the Defence Forces to the Cooley mountains to stop the sheep crossing the border (or something like that). It was an emergency! Fast forward 22 years and there are 3,500 children homeless in this Republic and the number is increasing. And nothing is being done about it. There's no emergency! I can't understand why the Government is not asked about it every single day ::fight

Govt is already paying out upto €1,800/month in HAP payments. Over 20 years, that's €432,000. I know there's inflation and stuff but surely the Govt could build (or hire builders) to build apartments and make their money back over 20 years? Govt owns a shitload of land and has control over the VAT rate, the tax breaks, and tax rates for builders & tradesmen. They could
manipulate massage the market easily enough if they wanted to.

The tide is starting to turn against the migrants/asylum seekers/refugee's.
We have been letting them in fer years but now the floodgates are fully open and there really is no more room at the Inn.
The upshot of it all is our own children now have to flee because if they want a house they need to pay circa 400k fer it and enter a bidding war against their own Gov to buy the house.
That is the reality of what these protests are about, and something is going to have to give soon !!

It's much ado about nothing, Ken. A few loopers trying to build a right wing platform is about the size of it. Opinion polls suggest the extreme left - well as extreme as the left gets in Ireland - will top the polls in pretty much every predominantly working class constituency which will hopefully result in the liberal Socialist Republic we deserve. I've every faith that whatever policy may be adopted by Deputy Owen O'Brin at that juncture will more than adequately address any shortage of affordable housing to facilitate both immigrant and indigenous population growth. Chucky our law!
I don't agree with your apparent hatred of those who reproduce, SB. Reproduction is central to the survival and evolution of our species. I guess one could argue that we have invested too heavily in education resulting in two, not unrelated, contributory factors to the need for economic migrants. First, women getting educated is undoubtedly a contributory factor to reduced family sizes and second, the quality of education afforded to the Chrildren of those smaller families is such that they end up over-qualified for unskilled jobs and many skilled trades.
There's an obvious and urgent need to fast-track the asylum process - something SF have promised and will, no doubt, deliver. It's crazy that we have tens of thousands of dark skinned lads filling hotel rooms in the direct provision system on one hand and tens of thousands of low skilled or unskilled job vacancies on the other hand.

I'd hazard a guess - being Romanian - they probably arrived here pregnant giving E.U rights to the child and to the mother, who is probably ALSO a child. It's their culture y'see.

Peter Casey got closer to 1,000 votes than 1,000,000 in the 2018 Presidential election and, as you well know, he has contested every election since including - but not limited to - failing to win a seat in the European Parliament in the Midlands-North-West constituency in 2019, failing to win a seat in Dail Eireann in the Dublin West constituency (2020) where he achieved a record low of 213 first preference votes and failing to win a seat on Blanchardstown Parish Pastoral Council. He previously stood for Seanad Eireann (2016), again failing to win a seat.

Indeed, Octy. Folk are entitled to protest and, in our democratic system, they are equally entitled to vote for candidates promoting any policies they support. In the context of this discussion there are small, insignificant groups on both side - racists and anti-racists - taking part in protests. The racist side is orchestrated by a handful of extremists seeking to build a far-right political platform, the anti-racists claiming to be concerned citizens seeking to distance their towns/villages/suburbs/etc from said racists.
Personally I don't support either protest, I understand the racist side is politically weak with relevant candidates at the last general election barely breaking the rounded 0% of first preference votes in the constituencies they contested so they do have a need to make some noise in an effort to attract support within socially and educationally disadvantaged communities.

The problem with the likes of Casey, Waters and Gemma is they think they're clever and they think they're relevant - they seriously believe every election they lose was rigged - so they can't keep their mouths shut and end up with opinions on every topic anyone ever asks them about. I reckon if you take the SNP oath and stick to one issue and one slogan (maybe "Send them home") you'd have as good a chance as anyone. The erm could be your erection agent....

I dunno, JohnM. Ireland is usually 5-10 years behind the rest of the world. Continental Europe and America are working their way through their own Far-Right/Fascist periods at the moment. In a lot of 'first world' countries, the rich get richer but the average person's wages/purchasing power hasn't improved since the '70's! Something's gotta give!
In Ireland, There's only so many times Granny & Grandad can pass on their life savings to the kids & grandkids before the money runs out. And with the migrants, it's all tea & sympathy until they turn up in your neighbourhood! With the housing & migrant crises peaking at the same time, we're due a right-wing shift as well, methinks?

From Culchies coming to Dublin pushing up the price of a hole in the basement of a tenement house right through to the Dublin descendants of said culchies moving back to rural towns. However, Irish folk tend to mix better than might be the case in other nations so whatever misgivings they may initially have tend to give way to harmonious social integration, perhaps peppered with a little good natured ribbing. Once folk realise the folk they feared are actually the same as them insofar as they get up, go to work every day, bring the kids to school, etc... the fear dissipates.
To be fair to Mr. Casey his popularity shot up when he jumped on the anti-traveller bandwagon, Ken. His performance in Presidential election 2018 is by far the best performance he has ever posted across the many many many elections he has contested. It was subsequent to that that he identified as a racist... in search of another bandwagon. I think it became pretty apparent at that stage that he just wants to be elected to something. Unlike other right wing candidates his commitment to the racist or the anti-traveller agendae seems questionnable at best.

It's much ado about nothing, Ken. A few loopers trying to build a right wing platform is about the size of it. Opinion polls suggest the extreme left - well as extreme as the left gets in Ireland - will top the polls in pretty much every predominantly working class constituency which will hopefully result in the liberal Socialist Republic we deserve. I've every faith that whatever policy may be adopted by Deputy Owen O'Brin at that juncture will more than adequately address any shortage of affordable housing to facilitate both immigrant and indigenous population growth. Chucky our law!
I don't agree with your apparent hatred of those who reproduce, SB. Reproduction is central to the survival and evolution of our species. I guess one could argue that we have invested too heavily in education resulting in two, not unrelated, contributory factors to the need for economic migrants. First, women getting educated is undoubtedly a contributory factor to reduced family sizes and second, the quality of education afforded to the Chrildren of those smaller families is such that they end up over-qualified for unskilled jobs and many skilled trades.
There's an obvious and urgent need to fast-track the asylum process - something SF have promised and will, no doubt, deliver. It's crazy that we have tens of thousands of dark skinned lads filling hotel rooms in the direct provision system on one hand and tens of thousands of low skilled or unskilled job vacancies on the other hand.

Naa... not my leader ...but I understand the frustration.....people coming in from all over the world claiming to escape persecution an certain death wen in reality in alot of cases ther trying to escape endemic corruption and poverty braut about by ther own governments and culture in countries that are far wealthier in terms of natural resources than ours ....

The only alternatives is Irexit and if we left the EU the whole state would collapse .They didnt make the middle of nowhere accessable for nothing .

I do agree with SB on the last point, fer me any Dylan, Kyle, Cian or Dean on a Cash job after midnight on a weekend night would have to be less than 1km away in the burb's and even at that I'd still be fussy with them and only looking fer a reason to cancel.
