A good few drivers that I know of, myself included, recently received an email from NTA advising that:
A recent check based on the PPS number associated with your licence has identified that you are not
currently registered as tax compliant. To comply with the licensing requirement set out in law, you must
immediately obtain an eTax Clearance Certificate from the Revenue Commissioners.
All those who have checked, myself included, have valid tax clearance as required.
-
I think u log on and tick a box on ros
-
You only need to do the box ticking if your tax clearance has really expired or been withdrawn.
If it says "Tax Clearance Issued" there is no such option. In the cases I'm aware of receiving the recent email (myself included) there was no issue with actual tax clearance i.e. ROS read "Tax Clearance Issued".

Got that myself this morning. Not a nice way to start the day & a few swear words were used. Thankfully, God forgave me after I went to church and threw a few coins in the collection basket.
I logged onto Revenue and I am tax complaint. Bit of a nuisance as I'm doing the suitability (LRA) this week and it'll be a long telephone queue before I get to speak to some minimum wage person in Cork >:(

How many lads will be on to their Accountant this morning paying hard earned for them to check that they are tax compliant ?There is another issue .If the Taxi regulator can check if we are tax compliant can they see your actual earnings .Are they harvesting your information to help them with fare reviews and licencing costs or suitibility costs .What is the extent of their right to know ?

And to think, Octy, that the Govt computers are probably made in China as well. There's no end to it!

What's the phrase - don't ascribe to malice when incompetence will suffice?
Data protection rules say just take as little info as you need to do the job. So it's likely just a yes or no to the NTA rather than the full info. And they wouldn't need to hire consultants to do the biannual fare review if they had our full data?
-
I guess we can't rule out the possibility that NTA was hacked by a US or Chinese built AI agent.

Youse probably got the same text message I got this morning from NTA but just in case, they say they're looking into it...
-
Yep.
SMS received:
We have been made aware of a possible Revenue issue relating to tax clearance updates, which may have resulted in some licence holders receiving tax clearance notifications in error. We are currently engaging with Revenue for clarification.
-
Rodent could Revenue contact UBER enquire how many registered Drivers .Then crosscheck their records for VAT registered drivers .A few Dickheads on other Platforms complaining about UBER and writing angry letters to TD s then posting their replies on the Facebook Pages seeking likes .Doing their best to bring the issue to the attention of revenue .Like I use to say never ask a question you do not already know the answer to .You only ever ask a question to get the Answer verified never to seek the answer .If you dont already know the answer dont ask the question .

Revenue are sound, taxi drivers have never paid as much tax.I doubt revenue are concerned John.
Maybe when the downturn eventually happens they'll shake us down a bit more.

Merch you can imagine other Dispatchers could be asking Revenue the question ? The Revenue are not charitable im sure a well crafted enquiry possibly made through the relevent minister would generate such a response from the taxithingey ."We have been made aware of a possible Revenue issue relating to tax clearance updates, which may have resulted in SOME licence holders receiving tax clearance notifications in error. We are currently engaging with Revenue for clarification. Not ALL just SOME ?
-
Maybe every month the NTA ask Revenue about those whose licences are expiring that month? Start of Oct is a few days away. Or maybe it's alphabetical? My guess is they're just keeping their database up-to-date and the two computers fukked up somehow.
Not a big deal... unless you've got your suitability this week (i.e. ME) and the NTA computer says NO :o :o :o

Uber are required to make returns summarising payments to drivers under current regulations. DAC7 or something like that, it's called. They could cross check those against drivers' VAT returns if they wanted to. I don't think that's relevant to this fuck up though, my VAT returns are all in order.
-
My VAT returns are up to Date .I was advised by my financial man to pay what I owed .Its just we assume that Revenue were mistaken ,but they probably advised the taxi thingey that SOME drivers may not have a Valid E cert on record .Could there be an Issue .If a Driver did not keep his tax accreditation up to date could his licence become invalid and his Motor insurance also be invalid as he was not a licenced taxi driver ?
-
Nha. They let you know when your tax clearance expires or is revoked. If you don't then sort it out within whatever time frame they allow they'll let you know that your SPSVVL is revoked. Revenue generally issue tax clearance once you address whatever needs to be addressed e.g. by making any outstanding returns. They wouldn't necessarily need whatever money is owed immediately to do that, they're always open to facilitating drip arrangements where required.
You and I are in a minority of 4 drivers that I know of who actually pay their VAT. There's no way Revenue are going to do anything that would require NTA to sack thousands of drivers. On balance you were probably (albeit correctly as far as the law is concerned) poorly advised.

... moral of the story... Don't ask!

Revenue will tighten the screws at some point. They've taken a softly softly approach with property tax for example. But this year they let it be known they're gonna start adding on interest and penalties to those who don't pay. If that doesn't get people motivated, they'll probably start applying the rule and sending out invoices to people. Ultimately, it comes out of your estate after you die. Probably the same with us (minus the death bit). Once, say, 25% of Uber 'partner drivers' pay VAT, they'll try and get it to 50%, then 75% and so on. Removing our Tax Clearance Cert is the ultimate threat.

Yep .Lads writing to TD s who represent millions of VOTERS telling them WE as a Group are totally divided .Why would any TD ever get involved ? Lads ranting that Publicans Reps are complaining that there are not enough Taxis .They have done that for years .Have the Taxi thingey listened to them ?Unlike Organisations representing Wheelchair users they got more WATs .Some lads are Karaoke letter writers they think they sound good but they dont hear what others hear .Back to my Original unanswered Question .Who asked for this Review and why ?
-
Apart from the legally required biannual fare review, there is no review. Well, maybe they'll get the office junior to produce a 1page 'needs further study' report in 12 months time. A few months ago, we were days away from striking (allegedly) but since the review announcement, it's being tumbleweeds.
That's how Irish Govt works - kick the can down the road and don't make a decision, e.g. HSE, NTA, Citizens Assembly, Consultants' reports, judge-led inquiries etc etc.
Edit: National politicians do funerals and write letters to Social Welfare, nothing more, nothing less.

Big upcomming issues for TDs leaf sweeping .Christmas parking .We complain about lack of transport and lack of housing .Solution bring in Foreign workers to build the Metro and House them .Solve one Problem increase another one .Its job creation for the next intake of TDs .

Dublin Bus brought in 100 South African bus drivers but they have them sweeping the yard etc because of permit issues. Unions are thinking of making an issue of it - should be 100 Irish lads sweeping the yards!
-
It's kinda mad. A friend of a friend runs a large company - has about 80 vans on the road. He's swamped with CV's from quantity surveyors and other degrees that he doesn't want. But he can't get any trades or apprentices.
If you had a trade, you'd make good money for the next 20 years probably, and it could take you around the world if you wanted to travel.

It is “not possible” to apply a 9% VAT rate to home heating oil under the VAT Directive, Tánaiste Simon Harris has said.
In written answers to the Dáil, the Fine Gael Minister said the VAT rating of goods and services is “subject to EU VAT law, with which Irish VAT law is obliged to comply.”
The remarks came in response to questions from Independent Ireland TD Ken O’Flynn and Labour TD Ged Nash, who both asked about cutting the rate on kerosene from 13.5% to 9%, in line with the temporary rate applied to domestic gas and electricity.
Now like the early School Leaver says its European Law .So imagine the reaction of Revenue when Dickie Boyd Barrett sends them a letter complaining that some taxi drivers have not registered for VAT because they dont want to .Nobody mentioned it for years until Free Now and Drivers started making an issue out of it ?
-
You couldnt make this shit up .Some lad on Facebook posting a reply he got because he complained to the Minister about tax clearance The Minister for Transport sent his enquiry to the Minister for Finance .Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face .Im sure the Minister for money will ask the Revenue comissioners to LOOK INTO THE ISSUE .I hope you are all VAT compliant !.I often go fishing with Big Dommo you throw a handful of worms in to feed the swim before you bait the hook .
I can see the NTA issuing Guidance now for drivers using overseas dispatchers ?about VAT compliance .
-
Coudnt give a bollox to be honest John. I doubt many of us are bothered about it. Most of the hysteria around the tax man is created by taxi drivers. If I wasn't on this forum I'd never have heard about it.

EXACTLY and the revenue were possibly not aware but Dispatchers like Free Now and Drivers asking ministers will bring it into view .

Went up to do the suitability with a printed tax clearance cert in my back pocket but the guy in the test centre shrugged and said 'it's all on the computer.' Said I was the second guy in with that 'story'. Nobody had told him anything.
SMS received: We have been made aware of a possible Revenue issue relating to tax clearance updates, which may have resulted in some licence holders receiving tax clearance notifications in error. We are currently engaging with Revenue for clarification.
No follow-up communication from the NTA. I wonder if many didn't bother turning up for whatever tests they had?
NTA Latest News (Mon 28/9/26): Tax Compliance Notification (https://www.nationaltransport.ie/news/tax-compliance-notification/)
We have been made aware of a possible Revenue issue relating to tax clearance updates, which may have resulted in some licence holders receiving tax clearance notifications in error this weekend.
We are currently engaging with Revenue for clarification.
Please contact Revenue if you have queries relating to your specific tax clearance status.
I guess they're blaming Revenue for this?
-
did they renew you ?
-
Yes. I was on the computer afterall.

My new office in Mullinavat in the heart of South Kilkenny was officially opened last week. On the 100th anniversary of Fianna Fáil i was delighted that Eamon O Cuiv, grandson of Eamon De Valera officially opened for us. It was great to see such a crowd come out and support.
The office will be open every Thursday and Friday, please email peterchap.cleere@oir.ie if you would like to book an appointment.
