Title: New vehicle to licence, no motor tax question.
Post by: Firewall on February 02, 2018, 10:57:31 am
I'm going to be booking my new motor in for SGS, but it currently has no tax. I'm guessing it needs tax for NCT, but can I tax it as a taxi, instead of privately. Difference in motor tax is huge, and don't want to tax it privately as that would be very expensive.

I don't think it needs tax for an NCT but deffo for SGS.

Is it brand new?

No, it's a second hand car. It hasn't been taxed since last year.

You might have to tax it privately for the minimum 3 months to get you through the SGS,then when it's passed out and you have your paper licence and when the motor tax is next due(after 3 months)just bring the VLC and your taxi licence into the motor tax office with the required change of use/particulars form(RF 111) filled in,they'll tax it as a taxi, take the VLC from you and Revenue will send you out a new VLC.

Yeah I didn't think it needed road tax.Just NCT and insurance for the vehicle.. Doesn't mention road tax on the NTA website.Ring them anyway you might save yerself a few quid.

I dont think a vehicle has to be taxed for the nct .Plenty of garages offer cars for test doubt they would add the expense of road tax to the sales price .If you need tax to drive it on a public road drive near the venue then push it in .

You must have the following in order to book your Licence Renewal Assessment:

Be tax cleared with Revenue
An insurance certificate
An NCT certificate

So i'm probably wrong with the motor tax bit...cos i haven't got a notion....but everything else i said would still apply.

It doesn't need a tax disc for NCT or initial suitability test.

Thanks for the advise lads, wasn't sure and didn't want to blow 400blips. 94 is much more reasonable. Have my tax clearance, Nct and insurance. Happy days. Got rid of the taxi, couldn't afford the insurance anymore, getting my own limo plate.

How do you get it to the NOT by road legally without a tax disc. I had to tax my change of car privately for 3 months when changing as it was an import. Even if any car is even off the road now you need police permission not to have it taxed even if its sitting in your drive.

You don't  need a road tax disc on your car for any test, but when it passes the nct and your limo licence is on it you then go into tax it.
They will back date it to the time you bought the car...

What kind of heap did you get?

151 E220. Showed pics of it crashed here 7 mths ago.

Again how is it legal, to drive an untaxed car to the NCT centre?

Dunno but I've done it on a few occasions, if your stopped just show them the paperwork and explain your situation.
You can't tax it as a taxi till it passes its test and when it passes it will be backdated

Thanks ver

A good car.Much more reliable than a 520d and not too bad on fuel.A word of caution however.GET THE AUTO TRANSMISSION fluid and filter changed every 50,000kms or you will end up having to replace a very expensive gearbox. It costs about 300 euro unless you can do it yourself.I am assuming it is an auto.

Enjoy the car, they are a nice motor.

You generally can't tax a car as soon as you buy it as you have to wait for the VLC to come back from Shannon. The Gardai make allowances for recently purchased cars and, as Tony notes, you will be liable for arrears from the change of ownership date recorded in Shannon so even if you are charged, provided you pay the tax (including any arrears) and the offence was allegedly committed within a month of change of ownership, there will be no loss of revenue to the State so the charge would most likely be struck out or dismissed the Probation of Offenders Act 1907.

The new rules removed the anomaly that allowed one to declare a vehicle as off the road retrospectively. That actually serves to ensure that arrears are collected so reduces the amount of Garda scrutiny required. In the old days you just had to fill in a form and get it stamped at a Garda station to "prove" the car had been off the road hence it was possible to get a new form every month, keep it in the car and never pay any motor tax.

I'll be keeping an eye on maintenance alright, expensive cars are expensive to maintain.. Soon to be working and make some money to start paying for it all..

Anyone know, how scrutinising are they on the SGS for limos? I have a few stone chips on the bonnet..

I've seen old Jags and Mercs with limo plates in rural towns and they had a lot more than a few chips wrong with them.

I don't think they'd be too pushed about stone chips.

I think it's ok as long as the stone chip isn't bigger than fist size...

SGS lost the contract to Applus+. Provided you're Irish by accident of birth they don't give a fuck what state the car's in.

The bonnet on my yoke is covered in them, booked the SGS for as late as possible, less to see in the dark. Rest of the cars bodywork is mint, as is the interior. Fingers crossed.
