Start with enforcing the 30KPH limit on the quays first.
Constantly passed by FN's at 80-100KPH, there again I've no penalty points or rent to chase.

Just another way to screw motorists for more money from fines. Talk about fish in a barrel, the bastards will make motoring impossible that fukking pair Keegan, and cuff are probably behind this proposal

Swings and roundabouts, Octy. I get as many complaints as compliments for my observation of the rules of the road. Some don't understand how the fare is calculated so assume that I'm driving slowly to deliberately run up the fare, others are just in a hurry or impatient.

We're great at making laws in this country and not enforcing them.

Let the councillers and city officials spend their days colouring in maps with their crayons.  It'll keep them busy and stop them really fukking up the city.

As a Cork shopkeeper said in the newspaper the other day, 'he's never seen anyone cycle into the city to buy a pair of pillows'!

Which is kinda profound when you think about it.

Can you imagine a very busy 40yr housewife trying to raise two school kids cycling into town for a few bits and bobs?  Or their school uniforms, shoes, books etc.

One sure way of making a man driver slower is to ask him to speed up, Octy. Some clients seem to have a well founded expectation that taximen will ignore the rules of the road. They don't realise that, as professional drivers, we have a duty of care.

Duty of Care;

It's 6.52am of last Sunday morning that I pick up this lady on a MyTaxi job fom Cork city center, she asks to go to the Cork International Airport hotel and asks; "Do you know where the staff entrance is ? I'm in a hurry, I'm supposed to be there at 7", I tell her; "Yes, I know the staff entrance around the side to the left".
Along the way she is attempting to put on a Tie and making a bit of a Hames of it, so while stopped at the Magic Roundabout lights I show her how to tie a tie, 'Around, Through and Under'.

Along the way I ask the lady; "Have you ever heard of autonomous taxies ?", "Yes" she sez; "I work in that business".
"Well my dear girl, the next or First time you get an autonomous taxi, ask it; 'Does it know the staff entrance to your hotel ?' 'Ask it fer instructions on how to tie a tie ?' And most importantly ask it can it do a 12 minute taxi job in Six minutes flat ?".

I drop her at the staff entrance to the International hotel at 6.58am and TBF she did add the full maximum tip.

A 12 minute journey in 6 minutes?

It's all great fun 'till lives are lost or insurance premiums are tripled.

with the amount of fukking road works going on in Dublin for the last 6 years, its nearly impossible to speed . every where you go in this God forsakin city there is road works. im thinking of going into a home for the bewildered because of it

I believe the speed limits are spot on around the city of Dublin apart from a couple of Country lanes that say 80....

The problem is attitudes...

Talkin to a legal person  last week....
He made this statement....
" the speed limits are unreasonable "
I spluttered half a pint Guinness all over him wen I heard that.....
I says to him....." would ya tell that to a judge"?
All he'll broke loose....
So I said " Would yu tell the judge the law is unreasonable "?
The conversation started about the price of insurance.....
There has been a significant amount of pedestrian and cyclists killed by taxis in the last 10 years......
Why....?
Simples
speeding....

octy most people would not have a problem with speed vans if it was really about speeding .in fact most people would actually subscribe to the policies adopted to try and stamp it out. but the fact is, it is not about speeding, it is purely a money making racket by the dept of justice.
can you explain why these vans are placed in locations where there is no history of accidents, but it is easy to catch speeding motorists ? can you further explain why these vans are placed in areas where the speed limit suddendly drops from 80 to 60 , and the vanis just inside the 60 zone ?
Title: Re: Speed limits extended
Post by: Rat Catcher on April 18, 2018, 05:11:17 pm
If the van is just inside the 60 zone it's camera is most likely focussed within the 80 zone.

There's a blatantly simple way to get the better of the enforcers - obey the law.

Agree 100 % ratti..... Happened to me on Nassau Street we'r it goes from 30 to 50.... Van parked behind a bus (van  on the footpath)in the 50 zone done for over 30....
Then quashed.....

But the speed limits and the misuse of speed vans by rogue operators is two entirely different things

At 7am of a Sunday morning, ya can take a few chances to accomodate customers,
the roads are empty and a lorra customers take the extra few minutes in de leaba
after a Saturday night.

My favourite jobs are 'Medical emergency jobs' and I have had 3 recently, One to
Southdoc, One to CUH A&E and One to CUH Maternity, ya can breeze through lights,
and break speed limits at will and ya can't be prosecuted if'n it's a Medical emergency !

Satins Wheelbarrow is in gor the NCT next Friday it will fail but if it passes the Emissions Ill fix the mechanicals and hold on to it till Christmas .Mechanic recons the emissions problem with Diesels is that they asre not designed for City driving they need a good motorway run to clear out the soot .What effect will the increase in the 30kph speed limit have on the emissions and fuel economy .Anybody do their NCT recently and how did they get on with emissions .

....can you explain why these vans are placed in locations where there is no history of accidents,....

That is not entirely true DM, when the Safety camera vans were first introduced on to our roads about 8 years ago, there was a provision at that time that Safety vans only operated OVERTLY on roads where a Fatal traffic accident had occurred.
That was slightly modified in May 2016, but still ALL safety camera vans must operate Overtly and all zones are shown to the public.

07 Octavia diesel.  Always had trouble with emmissions.  One year, they said my score was so high the machine couldn't read it!  No dpf, thankfully!

1. Last year bought some 'cleaner' stuff for about €20.  Run the tank to almost empty and add in this stuff.  Think my emmissions were close to zero.  Might be too aggressive for regular use.

2. This year, I did the NCT around Mar.  I was using dipethane when I thought about it.  Also did about 3 x 40min motorway trips with rev counter around 3,000 rpm.  Added a bit of petrol as well (~5% dilution).  Got a score of around 1 or 1.5 and the limit is 3.0 for cars that old (I think).

Add a touch of Dipetane, or Petrol, if you're feeling extravagant. Drive on the M50 in third gear at about 45/50 MPH  for about 10 minutes, Hey Presto...Emission pass. 8)

Never failed on emissions with Trigger's Brush or my current MKII Octy. Maybe yisser aren't maintaining them properly.

Your best result seems to be from the cleaning fluid, Watty. Do you remember what it was called? Might be useful to others going forward.

No, I can't remember the name.  But I'd imagine these diesel engine cleaners are all pretty much the same.

Edit: It was called Novafuel Cleaner and it was €18

Petrol bar is lower than diesel but not for long. Derv cars are for the drop, man...wake the fuck up. Hybrid or brand new petrol cars are the future...well. for the next 6 or 8 yrs anyway.

If diesel car prices are droppng through the floor, might make economical sense to buy a few cheap 7yr old diesels (in succession) rather than buy a new taxi at approx €25-30k?
Say you bought a 7yr old taxi for €5k and spent €1k/yr on maintenance.  €500 to kit it out with meter etc.  That's €8.5k over 3 yrs or €17k for two taxis over a 6 yr period.
Almost €10k cheaper than buying new.  Might be worth a gamble?

If anyone knew what they were going to do next, but no-one does. Some say the rideshare model is the future but others dismiss it. With the extension of this 30km limit to beyond the city limits.........there's nothing they might do that would surprise me anyway. People out there who believe Air B n B is all about getting people used to sharing their houses........? Who knows what Angela, Jean-Claude and co have in mind.

If you spent €25-30k on a new taxi and the taxi game went pear-shaped, you'd be mightly pissed off.  If you lost €7-8k on your investment in a shitebox, you wouldn't be so upset?
