You're something of an enigma when it comes to migrants, Octy. One minute it's "send them home" and the next minute "every house should have one".

However, I can answer most of your queries with one word, in fact quoting the great Sir Anthony Charles Lynton Blair KG... Education, Education, Education.

Even the kids of the corpo built ghettos of yesteryear are either too well educated to follow in their parents' footsteps filling low skilled jobs or lack the practical skills/training to pursue trades. The theory that we have plenty of workers waiting to address those roles if and when wages are increased is pure fantasy. The economy is at full employment in practical terms so there is nobody who wants to work waiting on the sidelines.

Similarly, experience shows second generation migrants are just as likely to attain 3rd level education and join the workforce as are our own kids. That said, we are in the context of a boom so we do have to be mindful of potential pitfalls that may emerge when the next recession hits.
I certainly am an enigma ratti ...the truth is I don't like change ...its an aspergers ting ....I was drivin down dame Street one day an ther was bout 2000 Shia Muslims marching down the street ....an ide only come around the corner an they wer all wearin black an carryin flags an I taut it was ISIS  an i shit me pants an flu up Andrew's Lane like a bat out of hell on cocaine....I've never tried cocaine...I tried cannabis
Once i think i told yous in Amsterdam an I had to have a  poo off a bridge into the canal in Broad daylight the  bodyly funcktion reaction to said cannabis  an I ran like fuk ...an as I ran into the red lite district I cud hear the cop car sirens all over the place .....never again ....but it was 3 rasterfarians  in the coffee shop who gave it to me ....black as coal they wer ....an big smirks on ther faces as they handed me the weed cigarette ting they made .....they knew wat they wer doin ...an ill never trust them darkie again ....on the other hand I quote Muhammad ali to me kids on a regular basis ....he's me go to human wen I need inspiration or life gets too tuff ...I always ask meself ...." wat wud Muhammad do if he was in my shoes ....me other favourite human ape is ghandi ....wen I feel like given sumone a few thumps I always imagine meself as ghandi ...an sumtines it works ....as for Nelson Mandela...need I say anymore ....
I'm not a racist atall atall ....but  the whole debate is huge ....we cud go on forever about the pros an cons of an open door policy .....but my instinct (for wat its worth an nobody gives a fuk bout my opinion
Even meself sumtimes  ) is
That most of it is motivated by money ....not compassion

Money is always at the heart of Irish politics, Octy. We have a long tradition of political scams and a well established brown envelope culture. Look at how Free Now controls the taxi trade, for example. Obviously migration and the housing of migrants and, indeed, those of our own who can't or won't house themselves presents extremely lucrative opportunities for decision makers which, to date, is pretty obvious in the vulture fund owned build to let properties with rents guaranteed from the public purse.

I know you claim to have little or no understanding of macroeconomics and such like but the big problem going forward is where it all ends. We keep educating our kids and the kids of the migrants so we are creating a perpetual need for first generation migrants. As you allude to, other nations have attempted to solve that by creating a two tier education system which focuses resources on the mostly indigeonous (lower) middle class population. In our case, if there is disproportionate investment (and there is!) it's the other way round with the Black schools (in the guise of Educate Together) getting blank cheques while white (generally RCC founded) schools have to beg, borrow and steal to get a poxy prefab. Of course, anti-RCC sentiment is also at play there. A woman was telling me (I don't know what level of truth is in it) that the majority of Educate Together - without whom the black kids would have to go to the same schools as the white kids and get, well, eduvcated together! - boards are controlled by those of Islamic faith... Out of the frying pan and into the fire?
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

I remember Gandhi from the old Roy's Roll's forum, a nice fella, bought a 4.5k gaff at the height of the Celtic tiger and struggled with bills fer years after. Havent heard from him in many years.
