Take a Leak
« on: April 03, 2019, 03:51:23 pm »
Got a letter about 4 weeks ago about a potential leak in my Water System from Irish Water, says the property is using over a certain amount of water which may indicate a leak !. Anyways have ignored it until today and a guy from IW contractors phoned me to arrange an inspection, needs to gain access to turn off water and do a check outside.

If its outside the house they repair it , if its inside then its me who's responsible, AFAIAC if I had a leak would it not have flooded me gaff ?

Told him I don't fancy knocking down me house to find the leak !

If its outside your boundry its their responsibility if its inside your garden walls I think its down to you .If you had of paid the water charge they would of fixed it free for you and refunded you the cash .

If it's not causing any damage or pouring out of an overflow pipe don't worry about it... it's free!
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

None of the above symptoms, So it must be outside then ?

Probably. Even if it was under a concrete floor it'd surface somewhere, wouldn't it? Could be a faulty meter, I guess.

Always remember the distinction between property and dwelling..........and tell them to fuck off if they try charging you.

I Suppose at the end of the day anything with the 4 walls of my house is my responsibility and as I have no symptoms of a leak it has to be their pipes / valves etc, so when/if I get them out it will be there problem.

Biggest waste of water is a leaking toilet cystern .You wouldnt notice it .If the water in the cystern is overfilling it will leak into the bowl ,so no damp or any sign .If this is the proble two turns of a screwdriver to adjust the ball cock valve is all that is needed .

Did you find the leak yet? You could follow the plumbers advice to check the inside too... instead of turning off the stopcock don't use anything that uses water for an hour before you go to bed, taking meter readings before and after...
