Got rid of the Skoda 1.9 replaced it with 1.5 fluence .Renault a nicer drive better tech more comfortable driver seats and position .Boot space ok but cant compare to the scoda .Boot hinges can be obstructed if the boot is full of bags .Fuel ecom is noticably poorer probably as you are using more of the engins limited power to move the car recon its about 15% more expensive to run than the Occy 1.9

Personally I wouldn't have went near a fluence, they are too small and light for this job.
I'm in the market for a replacement car myself and really don't know what to get.

Imnot a high miler so Fluence is grand .If I had serious coin then Superb is the way to go but cant justify the investment with my part time attitude to work .

You convinced me Hal Renault is a nice drive especially if your wrking long shifts .extra 4 or 5 yoyo a shift find the Fluence faster more responsive than the Scoda but brakes are not as sharp or mine might be worn always found Scoda brakes very responsive .

I convinced ye?

If i'd have known you were gonna buy an under the inFluence i'd have personally got ye in a headlock and choke ye out....to wake ye up!!

Anyways, all those people buying their new Corolla Hybrids on PCP finance...will be getting rid of them in 3 yrs time so there should be plenty around and cheaper than the Prius.

I'm in the same boat as Tony - can't decide. Except that it will be secondhand.

In defence of the Fluence, PSV.ie/24hrMechanic had a lot of Fluences out as rentals.  So they must of had some sort of reliability.  But now they've moved to Prius'''' I think.

My mechanic says get a Prius and there's millions of white Prius'''' driving around as taxis.  But I just hate the look of them.

I don't get the point of hybrids - you're kinda buying 2 engines and 2 potential sets of problems?

I keep thinking a Superb since my (pre-DPF) Octavia was so good to me.  But I worry about the 1.6 diesel engine - will it be strong enough?  And DPF problems.  And will diesel be taxed to the max in the next year or two?

Anyways, keep us posted, John.  Might be tempted by a Fluence myself!  They seem cheap (but maybe for a reason!)

I'd rather nail me flute to a speeding train than have a Prius, the superb 2ltr is a nice car but I want an auto box and the DSG is not recommended by anyone I've asked so that rules out Skoda.
Might have a look at the mondeo.

Used to have a Mondeo in my pre-taxi life.  Very stable at high speeds on the motorway  lol  Don't know about it as a taxi in the city (edit) - steering might be a bit heavy?

Not many 2ltr Superbs about 2nd-hand?

I'm going 2nd-hand so one good thing about Skoda is that you can get spare parts from VW/Skoda/Seat (etc?).  With the Mondeo, you're stuck with Ford (I think).  I'm no expert but I think you have to be careful with the oil on Ford's - there's no room for error.

The people who had problems with a DSG gearbox are the ones who never looked after it. Change the oil religiously ever 60k and should nay have a bother

Yes I know that but the problem with buying second hand is did the previous owner or owners know or do it?

If in doubt, just get it done and then do it again at the next 60k mark.
That’s why I buy English cars, Usually come with a full service history, all documents provided etc etc etc
