A single mum-of-one from Dublin 8 who will be made homeless soon has slammed the ‘stigma’ surrounding HAP.

Michelle Ireland and her six year old daughter Angelina will be left stranded in a matter of weeks when their tenancy ends.

Because she is a recipient of social welfare and HAP (Housing Assistance Payment) she said that the stigma surrounding the payment has been hindering her from securing accommodation.

“There is still a huge stigma surrounding HAP, there is assumption that you are lazy and looking for a handout,” she said.

“A single mum with HAP is not welcomed.”

Speaking to Independent.ie, the desperate mum explained that she has been searching for accommodation for months, contacting every advert she sees, but to no avail.

“I had this daft.ie setting where immediately when a new advert is posted, I would receive a notification on my phone and I would immediately contact the landlord,” she explained.

“I would send 20 emails, and I would get one reply, or nothing.”

Currently, Michelle and her daughter rank as a ‘non-priority’ on the list for social housing. In desperation, she contacted government ministers and TDs, but none of which succeeded in putting her higher on the waiting list, which is 15 years long.

She is now frightened for her and her daughter’s future.

“I feel hopeless,” she said.

“I wake up every morning with fear and think, ‘what will we do, if we contact adverts, will anyone reply today’?”

The 36-year-old, who is originally from Prague in the Czech Republic but has lived in Ireland for 13 years, has a series of medical conditions, including epilepsy and fibromyalgia, which she was diagnosed with recently.

She believes that her health problems, as well as the stress of house hunting, is affecting her mental health.

“I lie awake at night, absolutely terrified about the future for me and my daughter. This is not something I planned or want for me and my daughter,” she explained.

Michelle has been out of work since she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in January. The condition sees her in a lot of pain and has reduced her mobility.

However, she has decided to go back to college and pursue a level eight degree in social care.

Her daughter Angelina, who has a heart condition and received open heart surgery when she was five months old, is very worried about leaving their current home.

“We go to regular doctor appointments but she’s a little fighter, like her mum.”

“She’s very sensitive to the move so I don’t want to change school as she’s all settled,” said Michelle.

It was because of her daughter that Michelle made the decision to return to education.

“I want to be a good role model for my daughter but I feel that I have tried everything and I don’t know where else to turn. There is no support for people like me and my daughter,” she added.

Why would a landlord wanna rent out his apartment to someone who doesn't work when there are plenty of high earners willing to pay over the going rate to live in the city.I think the Independent does print these stories to wind everyone up.

A lot of property investers want Hap tenents as the HAP money is paid direct to them .I know a lad has 270 properties all HAP he bought years ago and bought during the crash .His HAP payments cover his mortgage repayments and then what top up he gets is cash flow .You have cash tenents and they dont pony up it can take years to get them evicted .

90 The system use to be long before we had Foreigners .Big Dommos Sister had a kid got lone parents her fella got the dole ,she got a flat for a £5 er and brought her ESB and Gas and Electricity bills down to the relieving officer .The Vinnos use to give her a few notes at Christmas .She was better off with her book his dole and other werfare assistance than many working couples  .Now because she was deemed to be a deprived minority she got free school books and a uniform grant her kid was clever got a grant to go to Trinity studied zoology he done his PHD on the Sex life and reproduction of the lizard faced fruit fly of Guatamala he is the worlds leading authority on this fly .He left Trinners signed on got the dole and a rent allowance  Broonhilda an Eastern European Beauty works in a mininum wage job making bedis in a BandB on Gardner street moved in with him he dosent work as he is still trying to find himself and work on his book .He recons he will stay on the dole until he gets a Corpo Flat that he can lock up for a year or two and then he will apply for an Arts grant and a Scolars grant and go to South America and study the fly ,then come back when the grant money runs out get his book published at about £700 a copy as it will be atext book he recons every university and Vet College in the world will purchase one for their refrence library he will make decent coin then go on the lecture circuit for a year or two then he is old enough to retire with his book money cheap corpo gaff and medical card and he will never of worked a day in this country in his life .PS the book will be tax free as he will get an artists exemption on it ..I actually know this Lad .I know loads of Women who went on the sick after they had a kid with post natal depression and 35 years later are still claiming .There is a system and if you play it you play it .More money was refused from Apple than all the fraudulent payments or dubious payments made in the history of the state .Your living in Rural Ireland where there is or never was or never will be a paying job for you what other option do you have but welfare or exodus .

i know lots of people who used BTEA to get themselves out of the misery that being on the dole is to get a degree and job from the degree. most people want to work. i know there are some crazy benifits to being unemployed or on disability, free tv licence, free cinema tickets etc but id rather be dead than on the dole long term.



Your living in Rural Ireland where there is or never was or never will be a paying job for you what other option do you have but welfare or exodus .

there are plenty of paying jobs in rural Ireland, i wouldn't live anywhere else.
