The foiled hit on Wednesday has raised concerns among officers of the increased use of "friendly taxi drivers" by gangsters.

At 9.30pm, armed officers stopped a taxi driven by a 53-year-old north Dublin man on Oscar Traynor Road, Coolock, and seized a handgun.

If a driver works in a particular area it's going to be tough to avoid certain people 365 days a year. It's not our job to frisk down the passengers just in case they're carrying weapons or drugs and it's not really our business what they're doing. That's why we have armed cops in 100k jeeps floating around.Apps have made taxis available to all sorts of people.Smartphones can be bought for as little as 60 quid.

I never give my number to anybody .Passengers sometimes think if you drive themto certain areas you are OK and ask for your Number .Driver might turn out to be totally inocent or could of been under observation .Time will tell .I bought a CCTV and was advised it might not be a good thing to fit it .

Most taxi drivers are friendly... I've even had customers suggest they've encountered friendly immigrant drivers in recent times.

I presume the customers you mention were either drunk or high on coke or both.

No, I've had a few of the regulars from the Northside suburbs suggest immigrant drivers are good craic. I've also heard several stories of immigrant drivers returning lost property that (in the view of relevant passengers) an Irish bloke wouldn't bother his testicles with. In fact an African immigrant went out of his way to return my own older not so young lad's wallet a while back... credit where credit is due.

Immigrants already feature prominently in commendations published by NTA from time to time.
