An Irish institution and a thoroughly decent and gentle man.

I never met him on a personal level but that's not how he came across in my mind. He drove an average car (Opel Vectra or something) and explained his relatively frugal lifestyle with the wonderful quote "my wants are simple and my needs less". Either way he made a significant contribution to Irish society and cultural development and, indeed, to saving lives on our roads as an activist and in his role as initial Chairman of the RSA.

He drove a banger and had a frugal lifestyle cause his arrogance and greed got the better of him....that's why ...first some bloke fleeced him of his investments then Anglo irish stripped him naked....
People like him is the reason I dont have a telly....
The shite coming out of Joe Duffy today makes me puke.....another dope

I don't think his financial losses were in any way relevant to his lifestyle, Octy. He was never going to be short cash on the hip with his earning power within RTE and beyond. There's a special Late Late Show on RTE One this evening followed by part 2 of the documentary Gaybo. Power city have Saorview approved TV sets starting at €129.95.

Wasn't it Eoghan Murphys grandfather that was Gaybos accountant when funds were misappropriated?

Wasn’t it Gay who highlighted unwed mother’s giving birth and passing away as they had to hide their pregnancy.
It’s all that deckers fault we have so many single mothers out there. He highlighted it and made it “acceptable”

Anyways RIP to him, and condolences to his family
