Cannabis found at taxi driver's home was an 'unopened gift'

A tazi driver caught in possession of cannabis at his Dublin home said he had been given it as a gift and had not opened the package.

Gurnandon Sobti (30) took responsibility for the drug when it was seized by gardai.

Judge David McHugh said he accepted Sobti's explanation and struck the charge out.

Sobti, of Foxborough Road, Lucan, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of cannabis.

Blanchardstown District Court heard the incident happened at the accused's home on November 27.

Gardai found a clear plastic bag containing cannabis herb with a street value of €25.

Sobti accepted responsibility for it and was arrested and taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station, where he made no reply to the charge after caution.

He had no previous convictions for drugs offences, the court heard.

Sobti was married and had been in Ireland for 14 years, his lawyer said.

On the day in question, he had a small quantity of the drug.

Sobti "didn't necessarily use it" but had been given it as a gift and was "holding" it.

"He hadn't actually opened it. He's not someone who the gardai are going to come into contact with for this type of offence again," Sobti's lawyer added.

He asked the judge to be as lenient as he could in the circumstances

The judge said he would take the case "at its highest" and accept the accused's account of what had happened.

Judge McHugh instructed Sobti to make a €150 donation to Blanchardstown Hospice and struck the charge out, leaving Sobti without a criminal record.

Indeed. He has a few drivers with names that suggest they are immigrants from the subcontinent working for him - maybe came to the attention of the Garda unit investigating the sale / rental of Eastern European brides? Strange that he presented himself as a mere "tazi" driver to the courts, no mention of his fleet operation? You wouldn't know how many pies he has fingers in... Ifn he was in Inja his fingers would be cut off... or is that Afghanistan?
