The easy way for me to do it mentally would be to divide the fare by 10 then divide the answer by two.And add it on.

14.40 divided by 10 is 144.
144 divided by 2 is 72.
14.40+72= 15.12

No need for a calculator.

Move the decimal point one place to the left for every zero in the dividing number.(10)
