The son of a former senior Garda officer has been arrested following a €1.6million drugs seizure.
He was still being quizzed at Tallaght Garda Station last night after his arrest on Thursday night.
The drugs were owned by a crime boss known as ‘Mr Big’, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
The seizure is considered a significant blow to Mr Big, a highly organised criminal based in Coolock, north Dublin.
Mr Big is believed to have high-level involvement in the brutal Drogheda feud that recently led to the murder of Keane Mulready-Woods.
Sources say the son of the retired garda has been ‘estranged’ from his ‘highly respected’ father for a number of years.
Yesterday, Garda HQ released details of the operation.
They said a vehicle was intercepted in the Kilinarden area of Tallaght, Dublin 24, on Thursday, and that during a search of the vehicle, a ‘quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine and a quantity of another substance believed to be heroin (both pending analysis)’ were seized.
The sole occupant of the car, a 24-year-old male, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug.
Follow up-searches were carried out at premises in Ashbourne and Ratoath, Co. Meath, and ‘suspected cocaine and heroin (both pending analysis) with an estimated value of approximately €1.6million was seized, along with other drug-related paraphernalia’.
The seizure is a further blow to the gang led by Mr Big, which is already under sustained Garda pressure following the killing of Keane Mulready-Woods.
