A murder investigation is under way after a man who was seriously injured in an alleged assault in Kilkenny early yesterday morning died in hospital.
The 46-year-old man died after he sustained a head injury during an incident at a house on High Hayes Terrace, near the Castlecomer Road and John's Green, in Kilkenny city at about 4am.
He was taken St Luke's Hospital, but died there last night.
A post-mortem examination is expected to take place later.
A woman in her 20s, who was arrested following the incident, has been released without charge.
A man in his 30s is still being questioned by gardaí.
The area around John's Green was cordoned off and gardaí have carried out door-to-door inquiries in the area.
Further examination of the area around High Hayes Terrace will take place later.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any motorists who may have dash cam footage from the area between 3am and 6am yesterday, to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on 056-7775000.
