Wonderful country we live in.

Some 5,000 people from 135 countries are set to be sworn in as Irish citizens next week.

The 5,000 candidates, including people from the UK, Poland, Romania, India, Nigeria and Brazil, will attend citizenship ceremonies presided over by former High Court judge Bryan McMahon at the Killarney Convention Centre next Monday and Tuesday.

Citizenship ceremonies restarted in December 2019 after they were put on hold for five months when High Court judge Mr Justice Max Barrett ruled that any person applying for Irish citizenship could not spend a day outside Ireland in the year before applying.

Mr Justice Barrett ruled in July 2019 that the Minister for Justice’s discretionary practice of allowing applicants six weeks out of the country, for holiday or other reasons, and more time in exceptional circumstances, was not permitted by law.

In limbo
While applications continued to be processed, ceremonies were put on hold, leaving thousands of applicants in limbo and leading to a backlog of 20,500 people waiting to be sworn in as Irish citizens by a judge.

In November 2019 a Court of Appeal overturned the ruling that applicants for Irish citizenship needed unbroken residence for an entire year in Ireland before applying to become citizens.

The most recent ceremony in December saw more than 2,000 people become Irish citizens.

The Government had previously said it aimed to deal with the backlog by the end of February.

Participants in next week’s event will include 982 people from the UK, 715 from Poland, 496 from Romania, 370 from India, 201 from Nigeria, 171 from Brazil, 138 from Latvia, 137 from the Philippines, 113 from China and 113 from the United States.

About 132,000 people from 180 countries have become Irish citizens since the ceremonies were first introduced in 2011.

Indeed. On a more serious note though, John, people like me are partly to blame for all this madness. A country needs its citizens to produce 2.1 kids to keep itself above water as you'll know from your Economics studies etc...seems there's a huge cohort of selfish fuckers like me out there with none...how else was this ever going to go?

And, I see Erdogan is opening the Turkish borders to allow trillions of Syrians into Europe...or is it millions?

Kushner might prefer to stay offside wielding power. He has plenty of it as it stands with Nathan Yahoo staying in his gaff when he travels from The Promised Land.

FFS Occi I thought you were one of the smarter idiots on here .THERE IS NO HOUSING PROBLEM there is just a different solution .

Lets Go back WW1 was a class war .Germany wanted to go socialist share the wealth .The Brits ,French Aristocrats and Land owners couldnt have that so went to war .They thought it would be over in Days then it went on and Bankrupted All 3 countries .Now the payback Britain was Bankrupt the treasury was bare so the only source of coin were the Aristos .So governments introduced Death Duty paid on your wealth ,the poor had nothing so paid nothing .This is why so many big Houses in England are owned by the National Trust the owners had property but no coin .Now the Government had lots of landed estates so thought how do we use this land going forward and decided to build houses so the middle class could buy houses built by working class labour and when the Middle class died they would owe Death Duty on the Gaff to the Government .

That was the plan until the banks fucked it up (or did they ) Poor people who couldnt afford gaffs got credit then the whole lot collapsed and the Arestos who lost the Big Gaff and Land were able to buy back what they lost for pennys on the pound and are now back to where they started out a big landlords .The tennements of old Dublin were the property of the landed gentry just like the new build to rent appartments Same owners different rent book .

John, you're far too into Economics with every theory.....George V was skint in Engerland before WW1.....His cousin, the Russian Czar had lots of gold....George wanted it and to do so he had to isolate the Balkan States....they had a turbulent history. He sent in a mind-controlled gobshite called Gavrilo Princip to take out Franz Ferdinand........and roll forward a few yrs....Czar was fucked over by the Banker's agent, Trotsky...Georgey got his gold and the Rooskies got Lenin.....
