Cardiff Taxi drivers demand safety screens.
« on: June 19, 2020, 01:56:10 pm »
Taxi drivers are urging local councils to push through greater in-car safety measures to guard against coronavirus.

With streets across the UK quiet in a bid to stem the outbreak, some taxi drivers have said they are "desperate" without business.

However, those still working have among the highest death rates involving Covid-19 of any occupation in the UK, according to official figures.

Again, why has no evidence been offered that we have a similar problem?

Do you mean a similar number of taxi fatalities Bob?

I suspect we didn't get it as bad as the UK because we locked down earlier and the 350 payment available to the self-employed allowed those of us who didn't wanna work stay at home.

Over there they were continuing to work in the absence of instant government assistance. One or two extra weeks of no restrictions can cause a disproportionate spread of the disease and eventually deaths.

Or maybe you meant something different ?

No, that's exactly what I meant, one would expect a proportional report here, albeit less drivers working.

Those of us who took the 350 and stayed at home were instrumental in keeping the virus at bay....no thanks needed!!

Even though we have a lot of ethnically diverse drivers working in our industry the UK would have many more so their death numbers would automatically be higher.Genetics are playing a huge role it seems.

Also because of our geography it's possible that we were still a week or more behind in terms of the spread of the infection but in the UK but they still took an extra two weeks to close things down.So there's a three week difference altogether. Not insignificant.

Combine that with the fact that we're relatively sparsely populated as an island that also kept the rates of infection down a bit.

Leo opened the government purse early but Boris stalled and fumbled his way through it just like Trumpy is doing in the US.

So by that reasoning there should be a proportional number in hospital, or on ventilators now, due to die in the next week or so.

Not quite I think we just didn't have a much Covid 19 on the island compared to the UK.Remember a lot more stopover flights and tourists go through London compared to Dublin. So they're just more vulnerable.

So when we locked down around Paddys day our lockdown was more effective because we got ahead of it by a few weeks reducing the damage.

That's my understanding but as always I could have it arseways.

To hear of even 1 working taxi driver contracting the pox would surely be expected?

Maybe there's a lot of older men working in Wales?

There's an Irish taxi driver page on Facebook with a lad who got it.Dunno where he caught it.Nobody dead though.

A few years ago one of the rankers from town got mouth cancer and died.I only heard three months later.Due to the way we barely talk to each other nowadays someone could have died and we may not have heard for a few months/years.Drivers are too busy on their smartphones to even attempt a conversation.

There's a hunger for deaths though... look at the way Vinny Kearns, the erm and others exploited the passing of Mick the moan. If there were any substance they'd find it and we'd hear it.

We got lucky. In the UK they had to wait up to six weeks for a government handout. Most lads don't have the financial reserves to take a couple of months off.
