Why would they invest in a form of transport that is unsafe. Read Justin's previous comments and you'll get a reasonable idea of what we as a trade are saying... Our cars aren't safe, those working are scum, please invest in more scum, thanks....

Well 20 years after the intransigence of the taxi industry unions,(most vociferous the Fed) led to deregulation been imposed, where the offer from the Fed was acceptance of 100/200 new Licenses that they would control as they did with their "open draws previously" where the State wanted Christy Humphreys 1000 members to get sorted and get him off their back--hence the free for all we have now !

Back then I was a Hack happily getting along --the Public loved us as we where not like those horrible Taxi Drivers--comparing like with like earnings were far better with regulation a lot lighter--
Taxi rental was lucrative then also--with many column inches of ads in the Press every Thursday --90 quid for days and 110 for nights --at times the owner would work week about but they were hungry fuckers-(so current IQ levels appear to be heredity )-Black Cabs operating out of where City does now ,Co-op and NRC were big operators but the biggest was probably Metro--99% Hacks--then Pony arrived in 95 so joined up with them --only bought  a Plate to get access to Bus Lanes--subsequently took a drop in earnings !

Since then year on year ,more and more regulations the only thing that remained constant was the small mindedness of the the active participants in the industry --
Tomorrow Leo will announce loads of good news, this will be for various reasons,(a) Go out with major PR coup for himself/party in case there is an election--similar to the Shinners abstaining in that vote yesterday, the new party of Law and Order !(b) Leaving Michael and FF little to announce (c)Rescue the World of Business --supports for everyone ,Tax and Rates relief,Grants for this and that to help them restart ,all aspects of Public Transport will get extra subvention bar Taxis !

We all hear of the Merc taxis in Germany ,where the industry is ruled by cast iron regulation --thats why No Medical Discount in Fatherland--you must charge the metered fare --two strikes and your out--or the Canaries where the cars are pristine as the Tourist Police put cars of the road for 7 days in a blink for any slightest infringement of regs!
Why did this happen, strong Governments with decent input for industry--here we might have had the former at stages we NEVER had the latter !

Lucky for me none of my kids will go into this business as they are all settled in better professions but there are plenty on here that will depend on it for many years to come and if no one gets out there and gets vocal with sensible coherent input (study Germany or Spain)they needn't worry about driver-less cars as the opposition they will be extinct long before then--
Its been a great game for me for over 25 years ,its frustrating and an embarrassment to see how its treated by both Regulators /Participants !

How do we know that Germany and other countries have better taxi services? What's the criteria for comparing one country against another. Driving a Mercedes isn't my definition of success. We don't manufacture any vehicles like the Germans do so have no need to subsidise them.

Our industry is doing ok.We got cheap licences and have little to complain about except the domination of one app company.

MFH the drivers themselves are the reason for a one app company

  • You don't want to do it like that
Been in the game well over 20 yrs and what Ive learned?

1)Taxi drivers are only there to be talked down to and told what to do.

2) The powers that be, dont recognise us as "public transport" but only when we have to pay them money.

3) I've been a member of every taxi rep, association and union each and every one of them talk out of both sides of their mouths and get no where.

4) Taxi drivers don't stick together whenever there is any dispute, so you reap what you sow!

5) The whatyamacallit  is an unmitigated disaster. A quango that  doesnt know what to do with its(our) money.

6) Nothing more to add
Exactly.

Akin to herding cats.

It would be silly to promote taxis as part of the new normal. We've heard drivers like Dalymount, Justin Time and Silverbullet telling all and sundry how unsafe the service is and their bosses (e.g. Vinny Kearns) telling the public to find alternatives. Common sense dictates that investment needs to be directed at safer, healthier, environmentally friendlier alternatives. Every effort should be made to ensure that taxis are relieved of their current public service remit. As a nation we should never ever ever ever come to consider taxis as an essential service again. NEVER.

Love to think of a buy back but reckon its a 100/1 chance--just have to live with constraints imposed on us as everyone reckons we are misfits, even our colleagues nobody wants to think outside the box !
I await the next rant so with great excitement  for as an industry thats all we do-- Rant  !

Most of the lads on here got their plates for IR£5,000... hardly a bitter pill to swallow if they can't make ends meet.

Your not allowed think outside the box in this game.no matter what suggestion you make you will be fed to the dogs just for making it.whos to say anyone making a suggestion is wrong just because some say its crazy.I firmly believe dospatchers are a liability in this industry, the fact that nearly 100% disagree with me does not mean im wrong,it just shows I have rhe balls to call them out, while others shite themselves at the very thought of it because they are so used to being told what to do,they could not function any other way

What you are looking for is a New York Taxi (yellow cab) arrangement (you cannot pre book a New York Taxi)
Thereby giving a huge portion of our trade to hackney/limo services
Do you not realise how stupid this idea is, or is your head stuck so deep in the sand it'll never come out?

^^^^ Punter I don't get the buyback idea.Sell your saloon licence back to the NTA for €6300 or maybe just leave the industry and save yourself a lot of hassle and money.

The licence was €6300 but to stay one the road it's costing nearly twice that every year under the current regulations.Anyone who could potentially benefit could easily buy a wheelchair licence and pocket the difference and never leave the industry at all causing more misery for the rest of the fleet.

I haven't heard a new idea in a long time and I am definitely not seeing any outside the box thinking in this thread. Why should they refund licence holders who have made twenty plus years wages out of their taxi plate?

Most of the "ideas" are about paying us a lump sum plus weekly payments to leave the business .. ridiculous shit.

Most ideas for improving the business would involve working, possibly harder than we do currently, which would upset many drivers.

Unfortunately getting paid to sit on your arse at home was a once in a lifetime deal and it's finishing up now ... some are in a panic about that

The COVID payment isn't up until August for anyone on it.Plenty of time to decide what to do.No point rushing back in to earn slightly more.

If the NTA wanna keep us they can extend the age rules if they don't need all of us they can enforce them as they were intended and some might drop out.

Easiest way to give us all 3k is put a year on our vehicle ages.Costs them nothing.

I'd much prefer they reduced it to 6 years and got rid of a big percentage of the fleet, that would improve the quality of the service and sort out the problem of there being less work

Why not reduce it to 12 months.Never need to change a tyre..

Yer idea is flawed as we'd end up with more renters as normal drivers may not get the finance. All you're doing is replacing an expensive plate with an expensive vehicle.Leaving an open goal for the limos to wipe us out.
