A man has died following a shooting incident in Ballyfermot in Dublin this morning.

The incident happened at a house in the Croftwood Park area at around 11am.

Gardaí confirmed the man had received a number of gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

They said the incident has all the hallmarks of a gang-related attack.

The scene is currently preserved for a technical examination.

An appeal has been issued to anyone with information, particularly anyone who was in the area between 10.30am and 11.30am to contact Ballyfermot Garda Station on 01 666 7200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Dublin pensioner killed with machete after confronting man, gardaí believe

Suspect attacked Peter McDonald (77), then engaged in six-hour stand-off with gardaí

An elderly man was stabbed to death in Clonsilla, north Dublin on Saturday morning after confronting another local man who had been acting erratically, gardaí believe.

The victim, Peter McDonald (77), was attacked with a machete-type weapon outside his home on Whitechapel Road.

His attacker, who lived nearby, then barricaded himself in another house for six hours before specialist gardaí Tasered and arrested him.

Mr McDonald lived on his own on the quiet residential road in Dublin 15. Gardaí had received reports of the suspect, who is aged in his 40s, acting strangely in the area in the days before the attack.

Gardaí believe just before 6am on Saturday, Mr McDonald noticed the man interfering with a car in front of his house and went out to ask what he was doing.

The man then shouted at Mr McDonald before attacking him with a long bladed weapon.

Mr McDonald suffered “catastrophic” injuries, a source said, and died at the scene in his front garden, despite the efforts of a local person and an ambulance unit.

The attacker ran to another house nearby, believed to be his own home, which was quickly surrounded by gardaí. A Garda Armed Support Unit, under the direction of the Special Tactics and Operations Command was also called in.

Negotiators made contact with the man. They were satisfied there was no one else in the house but concerned the man could self-harm.

Gardaí consulted with people who knew the man who told them he had mental health issues.

The Garda also issued a “media blackout” request, asking the press to refrain from reporting on the incident until it was resolved, in case this aggravated the situation.

At around 11am the man stopped communicating with gardaí. After almost an hour a decision was made to “resolve” the incident using less-than-lethal weapons.

Officers moved into the house behind bullet-proof shields before firing a Taser at the man and temporarily disabling him.

He was arrested and brought to Blanchardstown Garda station where he remains. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours before being charged or released. It is understood he has been seen by a doctor.

“All units involved in this incident worked closely under Garda Strategic and Operational Commanders with the strategic intention to contain the incident, preserving life and bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion,” the Garda said in a statement.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Blanchardstown Garda station on 01 666 7000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom Kitt said the area was “very settled”.

“There has never been any trouble in the area. People are living there for a long, long time.”

He said many of the residents are older people and “everyone knows each other.”

“The old folks have been through enough with coronavirus. This will be devastating for them.”

The incident was the fifth major barricade incident involving gardaí this year and the first involving a fatality.

There were only five such incidents in the previous three years combined.

I never understand why the Gardai would be concerned if he would self harm.......would they not make every effort to ensure that's exactly what he would do to protect officers from harm.

I thought it odd that they issued a "media blackout" request while asking anyone with info to grass... life "inside the K" is far from straightforward, I guess.

Man dies following 'serious incident' in Tallaght

Updated / Monday, 10 Aug 2020 21:08

A man in his 50s has died in what gardaí have described as a "serious incident" in Tallaght.

The incident happened in the Tymon North Road area last night.

Gardaí say they received reports of shots being fired at a house in the area shortly before midnight.

No injuries were reported, but following another incident outside the house, the man was hit by a van.

He was taken to Tallaght University Hospital with serious injuries, but later pronounced dead.

The driver of the van failed to stop at the scene and it was later found at Tymonville Gardens.

A man in his 30s was arrested nearby and is being held at Tallaght Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing for any information on a dark coloured hatchback car that was seen leaving the area around the time.

They are also appealing to any road users who were travelling in the Tymon North Road area late last night or in the early hours of this morning, and who may have dash-cam footage, to contact them at Tallaght Garda Station on 01-6666000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

What sort of a fella would volunteer himself with his dash cam footage and help put these barbarians away, and as a by- product put himself and his family in harms way? I once called the guards on a fella that did a runner on me. Fare would have been approaching 50 notes. The only reason I called plod was because your man ran into a train station and had nowhere to go cos no train was there at that time of night. They collared him in the jax. He was eating chips and you could smell them for miles . They lifted him to the barracks and it turned out there was a warrant out for him. Next stop the courthouse, and yours truly called as a witness. When I seen his cohort in the gallery and recognised them--let's say they weren't Irelands finest- I played dumb and let on I wasn't sure if it was the same guy that did the runner. Fuck that. It's not worth it. Another of the same gang was locked up for moider. Never again.

It was indirect intimidation I would say. Nobody said anything or looked crooked at me, but I've picked some of them up before, and knew I would again.

Are ya mad? The only person that even said thanks was the dirty maggot's solicitor in the lobby after the case. I told him I didn't do it for him.

Who's looking for help with murders in Ballyfermot?

Surely there's enough candidates locally?
