Lyft's quarterly results are out this week.  It'll be an interesting 'compare and contrast' with Uber.  Lyft doesn't have an UberEats to bring in extra cash.

The 'taxi' version of Uber is in trouble.  I think I read somewhere they only have enough cash to survive another 12-15 monhts.  Remember they're losing ~$700million every 3 months.  And that was in the good times!

They've lost Asia and China.  The ECJ says they should be regulated as taxis.  They've lost their London licence and will struggle to get it back.  Uber UK have lost repeated legal cases that their drivers are NOT employees.   And in America, California* has passed AB5 saying drivers are employees and now they're threatening to sue Uber about it.  Uber, of course, are threatening to take their ball and go home (i.e., shut down in California).  Lots and lots of countries are pushing back against gig economy companies like Uber - just look at AirBnb is the coming months.  Govts are gonna need every penny they can get for the next few years & targeting the unregulated gig economy is an easy win.

* California's economy is bigger than the UK's and, if it were a standalone country, it would be the 5th biggest economy in the world.  So Uber exiting there would be a big deal.

In those countries where it has a foothold it is ubiquitous in much the same way as Free Now is here, "I'll get an Uber". "I'm waiting for my Uber" are commonly used phrases, buying the UK's leading dispatch software and adding an Uber Option will make them unstoppable (Autocab used to be the biggest here as well) but I think the big players here have moved on?

I reckon the folk in California might cause a stir if Uber threatened to leave

Uber is only here to keep the Brits and Yanks happy. If the Airport is quiet there's fuck all on it... and a lot of the brits that use it whinge about the meter anyway... fuck them.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

If UBER drivers were deemed by the courts in the UK to be employees, then why does the same criteria not apply to dispatchers here who operate similarly ?

I don't think it was the UK that said they're employees, it was California, the sun and the drugs got to their head

Unlike Uber Joe, I don't wish to be anyone's employee.

Surely if they're now employees Uber could call the shots on what hours they want them working....or do drivers want it both ways?

Exactly my point. I worked for the man for long enough. I would not go back to that shite for diamonds I'd rather spend the second half of every year going through a mental struggle with the taxman than be told what time I have to get up in the morning or when I'm permitted to have a cup o' cha.
