And there in lies the problem Jonno why should the staff be exempt The Natzies tried that one I was only following orders .If there is a grey area then the whole thing is fucked it allows certain people or workers to be held to a different standard .Why do you think they are handing out 350 sitting down money .I doubt the waiting staff are taking more than that home for a weeks work .

You really don't understand what the PUP payment is for, you really seem to believe they want you to stay out of work?

GOOD MAN PHIL TELL THEM TO KISS THE BUTT END OF YOUR BOLLOX ......WELL DONE

Aoife Walsh and Philip Ryan

EU Commissioner Phil Hogan has apologised for his attendance at the Oireachtas Golf Society event where more than 80 people attended.

Despite the Taoiseach and Tánaiste telling him to consider his position, Mr Hogan is insisting on remaining in place saying he knows his attendance has "touched a nerve" with the public.

In a statement, Mr Hogan said he apologises "fully and unreservedly" for attending the dinner on Wednesday night.

'Big Phil' returns to Brussels with an ultimatum: In the name of God, go
"I want, in particular, to apologise to the wonderful healthcare workers, who continue to put their lives on the line to combat Covid 19 and all people who have lost loved ones during this pandemic," he added.

He said his actions have "touched a nerve for the people of Ireland, something for which I am profoundly sorry."

The statement adds: "I realise fully the unnecessary stress, risk and offense caused to the people of Ireland by my attendance at such an event, at such a difficult time for all, and I am extremely sorry for this.

I acknowledge my actions have touched a nerve for the people of Ireland, something for which I am profoundly sorry

"I acknowledge that the issue is far bigger than compliance with rules and regulations and adherence to legalities and procedures. All of us must display solidarity as we try to stamp out this common plague.

"I thus offer this fulsome and profound apology, at this difficult time for all people, as the world as a whole combats Covid 19.

"I spoke to both the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste yesterday and I have listened carefully to their views, which I respect. I have been reporting to the President of the European Commission on all these matters in recent days."

'Consider his position'
It comes after Taoiseach Micheál Martin and the Tanaiste asked EU Commissioner Phil Hogan to "consider his position" following his attendance at an Oireachtas Golf Society dinner.

More than 80 people including the now-former Agriculture Minister Dara Calleary attended the event at the Clifden Station House Hotel in Co Galway, on Wednesday.

The event was held to mark its 50th anniversary at the Station House Hotel in Co Galway on Wednesday evening, after the Government announced new restrictions on Tuesday that reduced capacity for indoor gatherings from up to 50 to six people, with the exception of weddings and cultural events where up to 50 people can attend.

In a statement to the Sunday Independent last night, a Government spokesman confirmed: "The Taoiseach and the Tánaiste did speak with the commissioner today and asked him to consider his position.

"They both believe the event should never have been held, that the commissioner's apology came late and that he still needs to give a full account and explanation of his action."

Travel to Brussels
The Sunday Independent has also learned that in the first week of July, Mr Hogan travelled from Brussels to the Netherlands to take part in a tournament organised by the Irish Wild Geese Golf Society, which is based in the Belgian capital.

There were no travel restrictions between Belgium and the Netherlands at the time, but both countries are deemed unsafe for travel by the Irish Government.

The number of new cases per 100,000 people in both countries is almost double the rate in Ireland.

You're a tough cookie John .
They'd need to legislate for that mine field. Uproar there would be, my young Padawan.
I suppose if you drill down to the micro detail, presumably the bucko (that wiggy fella) that booked the shindig probably bypassed the reception and went straight to the top. I imagine the first question was " listen Paddy, there's more than 80 of us, how are we fixed?"
"Not a problem Donie, leave it with me". 81 of them didn't just rock up without prior clearance.
Hopefully these are the questions asked in the dail.

Letter to the Editor of the examiner

Is there a witch hunt going on in Political Circles .The calling for Big Phil to consider his position coming from the the Taoiseach an Tanaiste but not the other party leader in the Goverment might be a Salome moment of offering a head on a plate for the Greens to continue to support this shambolic government .
Is it actually Politically prudent to be calling for Big Phil to resign from the European Comission .He has a seat at the coalface in these Brexit talks that any new Irish Co missioner might not have such influential access .For the Good of the Nation it might be better for Phil to stand his ground and let this Government crash .The whole debacle is been elevated to more than it really was .If everybody at the event should review their conduct then why are the hotel staff waiters and kitchen staff not being required to give up their jobs .There seems to be two agendi going on here .
Regards .
John

Bob Beef and Dairy industries in Ireland are trading insolvent .Without Grants and handouts they would be Bankrupt .For years the oul rural economy card has been played .There are Dairy farms in New Zealand the size of Irish Counties who get no Government Subsidies .Why should Irish shoppers have to pay 12 euro a kilo for beef when its available for half that price on the open market .Do you remember when Guinness controled most of the Pub trade by lending money to publicans .You could get Guinness Smithwicks or Harp no foreign gargle on sale like Bud,Coors,Heiniken,Carlsbers ,Bulmers and Paddy,Jemmy or Vodka the only spitits .The day of Farmers holding the Country to ransome is over .The day of the publicans influencing government policy by letting the local TD hold his clinic in the lounge are over .The EU and the Government artificially keep the price of stuff high to subsidise certain businesses out of your pocket .

I posted earlier Bob I would think the Greens wanted his head to save the government .Leo and Mick know how important it is for Ireland to have somebody at the table to do the Brexit Deal .Im expecting one or two of the sprouts to leave the Cabbage Party within the next few days .A lot of them are activist not politicians .In the Real Polotic we Need Phil in Place more than we need this Government .

Well, they got through Sunday without any fatal exposures in the papers or talkshows.  I was kinda surprised nobody got the CCTV or photos from the hotel but, as somebody asked already, who owns the hotel?

Big Phil is an EU hotshot and mostly immune to what happens on this damp rock.  The Judge?  Well, the Constitution, blah, blah.  The Govt will be very apologetic about everything but sadly their hands are tied...

The Govt will take their beating in the Dail next week (30 secs on the news) and all will go back to normal-ish.

I wonder what the odds are that something about schools will break Mon/Tues to distract the peasants from Golfgate?
Getting old is compulsory whilst growing up is voluntary.
