Dublin lockdown: Paddy Power say odds are good that Dublin will come out of Level 3 restrictions in three weeks

The odds on a General Election this year have also shortened considerably

Dublin's pubs and restaurants remain closed while the rest of the country enjoys supping on pints again after tight measures were introduced to stem the spread of coronavirus in the capital.

The city was moved to Level 3 of the Government's Living with COVID-19 plan on Friday as the virus runs rampant across the county.

The measures will remain in place until October 9 but the odds are looking good that they won't last any longer than the expected three weeks.

Bookmaker Paddy Power are offering odds of 4/6 that the city will move back to Level 2 in three weeks’ time while odds of 11/10 say that Level 3 will remain in place.

Paddy Power himself said: “It has been a pretty hectic few days for all things COVID, and changing odds certainly reflect that.

"Dubliners are currently staring longingly at their neighbours enjoying the sweet taste of freedom (and beer) in their local pubs, so here’s hoping that it’s three weeks and done for Dublin.”.

Odds have also continued to shorten on another General Election in 2020 and are now at 3/1 - in from 10/1 a month ago.

Meanwhile across the water, with the potential of more lockdowns, Brexit and the denial of a trip to Italy, Paddy Power has halved the odds of Boris Johnson being replaced as UK Prime Minister in 2020 from 8/1 to 4/1.

General Election ?   Leo sucking up to the Farmers .IN a boost for beef farmers, the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has indicated that he will not be bringing the Mercosur trade agreement for ratification to the Dáil this year or for the foreseeable future.

The deal brokered last year between the EU and a host of South American countries, including Brazil and Argentina, would have allowed an additional 99,000t of beef to be imported into the EU levy-free.

The Green Party has asked Leinster House authorities to address the issue of birds and other animals becoming trapped in an enclosed courtyard in the complex.

A letter on behalf of the Greens' parliamentary party cites the case of 'Melania the Squirrel' as well as a baby magpie that died after becoming trapped. The courtyard, which has a water feature and flora, is based in the LH2000 annex and is surrounded by the walls and windows of offices used by politicians and other staff. Its enclosed nature has resulted in a "large number of birds and other animals becoming trapped and unable to escape", according to the Green Party's letter, which came before the Oireachtas Commission on Monday.

The letter refers to 'Melania the Squirrel' who became trapped in the courtyard for a number of weeks in the last Dáil before escaping when the building was mostly empty by climbing through an open window in the offices of Eamon Ryan and Catherine Martin, running down the corridor and climbing out of another office window.

However, the letter notes that more recently a baby magpie "who seemed unable to fly due to a problem with one of its wings" died of starvation as it tried to shelter from rain beneath the window of Ms Martin's office.

While some trapped birds have been rescued, the letter states: "We have been told by Facilities that they cannot interfere with other species and that they 'must let nature take its course'.

"This would have been the case with Melania had she not escaped through her own resourcefulness."

The letter notes that while "nature undoubtedly involves death, starvation and all of the inherent cruelties that come with its own course", the LH2000 courtyard is not a natural setting. "Many animals don't realise that until they have found their way in, with no way out," it adds.

The party has requested that the Ceann Comhairle and the commission examine solutions, including a "formalised way" for animals to travel through a corridor to get to a courtyard behind the National Gallery, putting a net over the courtyard (although it adds this may lead to birds becoming stuck), or linking with an animal welfare/rescue charity.

May I point out that squirrels located in central Dublin are grey squirrels immigrants and not indigenous species and therfore considered a menace an verman ...not only that they are carriers of squirrels pox which has driven our own red squirrels to the edge of oblivion an extinction......likewise the magpies are of Asian chinese origin ...a killer  whos ferocious appetite for young song bird chicks has rendered vast  areas of our beutiful country devoid of said song birds with the tragic consequence of deafening silence in spring time and idle bird feeders ......
They shud shoot the cnutin tings ....an while ther at it ....shoot eamon the turnip ....an meehole the cabbage
