London taxis stored in fields as demand collapses

London taxis stored in fields as demand collapses (BBC)

Quote
Farmland near Epping Forest, Essex, has become home to an unusual crop – hundreds of unwanted taxis being stored by London drivers who have seen demand collapse.

Official figures show that one in five black cabs has been taken off the road since June as drivers struggle to make a living.

Steve McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association said London cabbies were earning "starvation wages", at around a quarter of normal levels, and some had no income at all since March.

Drivers "are doing desperate things" such as selling their taxis for well below market value to "get through the next few months", he said.

"We're in a position now where London could lose this icon," McNamara said.
