Bus drivers are calling for immediate action to be taken to protect their lives claiming routes through West Dublin are putting them and their passengers at risk.

Go-Ahead Ireland drivers have called out the company for not allowing them to park buses and pull out of areas affected by anti-social behaviour, something that Dublin Bus drivers are occasionally forced to do.

Drivers that are members of the Revolutionary Workers Union believe "immediate action" must be taken by the company to protect drivers and passengers in Ballyfermot and Tallaght.

The company operates the former Dublin Bus routes of the 18, 76, 75/a, and 175 through the suburbs.

The union said: "We write to urge you to take immediate action in relation to anti social behavior on the Ballyfermot/West Tallaght routes that you operate, that poses a serious risk to the health and safety of both passengers and drivers.

"Immediate steps must now be taken by the company to address the anti social behavior and to implement protocols that would see drivers refuse to move buses that become affected by anti-social behavior until help has been received.

"Failure to take this course of action will result in the RWU advising our members to withdraw services when a bus becomes affected by anti social behavior.

"Such action is necessary to protect the safety of passengers and drivers and to prevent the loss of life.

"Such protocols are already in place at Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland’s passengers and drivers are entitled to the same respect to their right to safety and not to be put at risk in the pursuit of private profit.

"We will be monitoring this situation very closely and expect the above recommendations to be acted on with immediate effect."

Dublin Live have contacted Go-Ahead Ireland for comment.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

The law of unintended consequences.  You privatise the bus service and end up with the "Revolutionary Workers Union".  SIPTU musk be shaking in their boots!

Dublin Bus drivers would just refuse service. I remember getting earful after earful of abuse from a poor old "lady" when she had to take a taxi to Ballyfermot because the bus service was withdrawn in similar circumstances. Apparently it was a regular occurrence then (only last year) and, in some strange way, she seemed to think it was my fault! - me, who was making sure she got home safely for pennies without giving my own safety a second thought!
