New taxi rival for Free Now and Uber launches in Dublin
Bolt was set up seven years ago by a 19-year old Finnish student and is now worth €1.7bn

Bolt, a taxi-hailing app to rival Uber and Free Now, enters the Irish market on Thursday. The company is due to launch services at about 2pm in Dublin, with plans to extend its rollout to other cities next year.

The service, founded in 2013 by then-19-year-old Finnish tech entrepreneur Markus Villig, has signed up more than 1,000 drivers in the capital, who will pay it a commission of 10 per cent for each fare booked through the app. This compares with the 15 per cent commission drivers pay rivals such as Free Now.

Bolt, which was valued at €1.7 billion in a fundraising earlier this year, claims about 30 million users and operates in 150 cities, mostly in Europe and Africa. As well as its taxi app, the company also rents out electric bikes and e-scooters and has a food delivery division, Bolt Food.

Luke Mackey, Bolt’s country manager for Ireland, says the company has no plans to launch its food delivery service in Ireland. However, the company intends to launch e-scooter rental services in Dublin once the machines are fully legalised and regulated in this market.

“It looks like there will be some form of licensing regime for e-scooter rental. We are definitely interested in it,” said Mr Mackey. The company provides the service in about one-third of the cities in which it operates, and is investing €100 million in e-scooter rental across its network.

The company’s taxi app will initially be marketed through cut-price promotions, and in partnership with digital payments platform Revolut, which has 1.2 million Irish users including more than 500,000 in Dublin.

Carbon credits
Mr Mackey said that following Thursday’s launch, Dublin Bolt customers will get a 50 per cent discount on their first five fares, capped at a €7 discount on each trip. Revolut customers will get an extra two discounted journeys through the payment app’s rewards programme.

Bolt, which is among the top three taxi apps in London, is attempting to carve out a market niche for itself by trumpeting its green credentials. The company says it purchases carbon credits – investments in environmentally friendly activities such as tree planting – to offset all of the customers’ journeys undertaken on its network in Europe. About one-third of the taxis signed up so far for its Dublin service are electric or hybrid vehicles.

Bolt is launching in Ireland with just a handful of operations staff, but Mr Mackey said employment numbers will be scaled up as it expands services here.

How many carbon credits would you need to offset a 2010 Avensis?

Competition should be welcomed even if it's Uber. The most important thing to take from this is the link up with Revolut.A very popular app, especially with the foreigners. This one might actually take off.

They are launching at 2 o'clock and haven't thought to tell their signed up drivers ?
The last I heard was on October 2nd
'Due to new restrictions, we've temporarily postponed our launch. We're monitoring the situation, will keep you updated.'

There will be a few of these press releases even if there's no work VD. Takes time for them to get their name out. If they're discounting they'll be getting more media coverage in January.

So Uber is trying to buy Free now and at the same time are funding Bolt. Yesterday, Uber's share price hit an all-time high. We haven't heard the last of them. Their food delivery business is hopping too. It's getting much harder to ignore them.

do you think any of the apps will ever be available in small towns? why did they never try to operate in such towns? not enough money in it for them? not that I would ever sign up to them.

NOT JUST SOMEBODY LOOKING FOR 10% of your earnings ....Dublin Bus has announced a new 24-hour service and 80 jobs as part of an extra €4.9m investment from the National Transport Authority.

Route 39a running from UCD to Ongar will go 24-hour from Sunday 13 December.

It will operate every 30 mins from 11.30pm to 5am and is the third 24-hour route after Route 41 (city centre to Airport and Swords) and Route 15 (cross city from Ballycullen to Clongriffin).

In a statement, Dublin Bus said the 24 hour services will facilitate increasing employment in the night time economy as businesses expand their opening hours.

Anne Graham CEO of the NTA said "it is no longer the case that the city shuts down at 11 or 12 at night. We believe that enhancement like these, along with the revised bus network in Dublin, and the investment in our bus corridor infrastructure under BusConnects, will bring about the kind of improvements that people expect in a modern city."

There will also be improvements to routes 1, 9, 13, 24, 39, 39a, 40 and 83.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said the extra funding is the result of the government's July’s stimulus package saying funding for a public transport system is important for post-Covid recovery.
