Gardai handed out 16 fines on Thursday after breaking up multiple house parties across the country.

Parties were interrupted by officers in Limerick, Cork, Galway, and Kilkenny/Carlow in the space of just 24 hours.

The fine for organising a house party is €500 and attending a house party is €150.

2,400 fines have also been issued by Gardaí to date to people who left their homes without a reasonable excuse.

Speaking today, Deputy Commissioner, Policing and Security, John Twomey said: "The vast majority of people are continuing to play their part in tackling the spread of COVID-19.

"They are staying home, only making essential journeys, and exercising within 5km of their homes. We appreciate the sacrifices they are making and we ask them to keep it up.

"However, there are still some people putting themselves their loved ones, their friends, and their neighbours at risk of getting COVID-19 by not adhering to the regulations.

"People are dying from COVID-19. People are seriously ill. Our brave doctors, nurses, medical staff and other front-line workers are putting their lives on the line to protect others.

"They need our support and they deserve our respect. The best way of doing this is to stay home.

"People should only make essential journeys, reduce their contacts, practice social distancing, and wash their hands. Please stay safe and keep others safe by staying home.”

Nationwide checkpoints and high visibility patrols at public amenities across the country will also continue this weekend in support of public health regulations.

Some people need a close relative or friend to die an excruciatingly painful death for the  seriousness of the virus to sink in.

YEAH...it was just boring virus talk to me ...until I got it...There are a lot worse off with it than me and its a terrible way for them to end their days. ...and it is 10 times worse than ordinary Flu for most(comes & goes). The rest of my family got it but they recovered within a week or so. I get the feeling that they think I am not trying hard enough to get over it but it takes your confidence away by letting you feel you are better and then flattening you back down,,,from nowhere. We have to defeat it...if we want to get some type of normal lifestyle back.

You can take  my place on the queue for the vaccine.  Sounds as though you've been through the mill.

I guess An Taoiseach is relying on herd immunity hence his forcing men to choose between working up to 160 hours a week or watching their families starve to death.

Bring back Dr. Leo. Dr. Leo was great so he was...

Did herd immunity work for the Foot & Mouth disease?

That was an awful thing. They even stopped horse racing both here and on the mainland and remember how we had to walk through a foot bath or treated mat at airports... I even had to surrender an uneaten pork pie at the ferry port.
