Tánaiste and Minister for Business Leo Varadkar has said the Republic must be prepared for a rise in interest rates that could make the State’s vast borrowing for the pandemic more expensive.

He said the State is “overdue” a period of price inflation, which could be followed by higher interest rates. In an interview with The Irish Times, Mr Varadkar said he “fears” the impact of inflation on the Irish economy, especially if it pushes up the cost of borrowing.

“It’s been so long since we’ve experienced it that we are overdue. We need to prepare for this possibility and interest rates going up as a consequence. I don’t think enough economists are talking about this.(The Irish Taxi Forum one was ) With so much quantitative easing, Government borrowing and low interest rates for so long, it has to be on our risk register,” he said.

Inflation worries

Several economists do not share their concerns, however. Dermot O’Leary, Goodbody stockbrokers’ chief economist, said current inflation worries in global markets related to the US and the ramifications of its $1.9 trillion stimulus plan. “Even the European Central Bank believes that euro area inflation will stay within the 2 per cent target in the longer term,” he said.

Austin Hughes, KBC Ireland’s chief economist, said a modest dose of inflation might actually help Ireland with the sustainability of its debt. “A little bit of inflation would be a good thing,” he said.

Meanwhile, addressing the Employment Bar Association conference on the world of work post-Covid, Mr Varadkar said there was a danger that cities could be “hollowed out” by wide-scale working from home or “blended” arrangements after the pandemic.

Such a development could lead to the Republic losing out to other countries for talented mobile workers, he suggested.

   

“We don’t want to see our cities hollowed out. Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway will be competing with Barcelona, Liverpool, Paris and Lisbon in the battle for talent. And talent can remote work from almost anywhere, so our cities need to be vibrant places where talent wants to live,” he said.

Several death threats have been levelled against Tánaiste Leo Varadkar in recent weeks, leading to him now requiring round-the-clock armed garda protection, the Sunday Independent can reveal.

Senior sources say the deaths threats are being taken "extremely seriously" and gardaí are "responding appropriately" in terms of providing protection to Mr Varadkar.

It is the responsibility of the Special Detective Unit (SDU) to provide armed protection in the form of a full-time SDU driver to the Tánaiste of the day.

A former Fine Gael TD has launched a blistering attack on her leader Leo Varadkar and asked “when he’s going to start delivering for” the party.

Kate O’Connell, a Dublin TD and pharmacist who lost her seat at the 2020 election, also said she believes Mr Varadkar is “in trouble” after it emerged former Minister for Health Simon Harris told gardaí that he had refused to leak a confidential document to the now-defunct organisation the National Association of General Practitioners.

Mr Harris was interviewed by gardaí regarding their investigation into the leak of the same document by Mr Varadkar in April 2019 earlier this year according to this morning’s Sunday Times.

“I do, I don’t like seeing anybody in trouble but I do think it’s very concerning for the party,” Ms O’Connell told Brendan O’Connor on RTE Radio this morning.

“When you have the leader of the party subject to a criminal investigation it just wouldn’t sit well, in my view, with the membership of the party,” she said.

“It appears there was a confidential document leaked, I was in the Dail at the time, there was a lot of talk at the time about that contract. The fact is it was a valuable document to an organisation that wasn’t entitled to it.”
“Nobody has said that anybody has broken a law yet, that’s the job of the DPP. But in terms of the party, it is always going to be damaging. If you have the leader of a party that’s subject to a criminal investigation that can never be a positive,” Ms O’Connell said.

The former TD for Dublin Bay South, who supported Simon Coveney during his bid for the Fine Gael leadership in 2017 instead of his opponent Mr Varadkar who eventually triumphed easily, said she wonders “when Leo is going to deliver for Fine Gael”.

She said that at the time of the leadership contest Mr Varadkar’s victory had been “about gaining seats, momentum for the party, a new vision for the party”.

“I know with Covid things have gone a bit tricky, but I’d imagine people are looking at him and going ‘if there’s anything in this it will be damaging,” she said.

She added that “if there’s nothing then I think he will be fine”.

“If somebody hasn’t actually done something wrong and that is decided by the gardaí then they’re clear, I don’t think anyone should be dragged through the newspapers in the way that is happening at the moment, unless there’s a perception that something will happen.”

“I think it’s innocent until proven guilty,” she said.

Fine Gael is in "turmoil" over the ongoing criminal probe into Tanaiste Leo Varadkar's leak of confidential documents, according to senior party sources.

It was reported on Sunday that former health minister Simon Harris was interviewed by gardaí as part of their investigation into the leak of a GP contract by Mr Varadkar to a friend in a rival GP organisation in April 2019.

Mr Harris told gardaí that he had refused to leak the confidential document to the now-defunct National Association of General Practitioners.

Senior party sources have confirmed that both those close to Mr Varadkar and backbenchers are concerned about damage to the party after weeks of leaks from the investigation in Sunday newspapers.
"The comments from the gardaí sources in the press allude to the fact they're likely to progress this inquiry," one senior source said.

"It appears like they want to turn up the heat.

"Regardless of what anyone says they're all worried, what happens if he's brought in for questioning, under caution, that'll be leaked, then if a file gets sent to DPP, even if they don't prosecute that's another moment, how long does it go on for?

"Denis Naughten had to go over the perception of wrongdoing, Frances Fitzgerald didn't break a law, they both went — Leo calls for people to resign every day of the week.

"The longer it goes on the worse it is, Leo admitted he was wrong and now the party is in an ordeal over his behaviour."
