Who mentioned Dublin Bus ?It will be privatised with less terms and conditions for workers. The most expensive part of running a bus service is the investment in the Bus.
Have to disagree with ya on this part....
The bus isnt the most expensive part... wages for drivers is, even with reduced terms and conditions.
I agree with you that the writing is on the wall. The Government, rather than getting into any industrial relations argy bargy with the CIE unions, have adopted a slowly slowly approach and will erode Dublin Bus and Bus Eireanns Market share down to the point where unions will no longer have the same influence or power.
Go Ahead are a private operator on a fixed contract like the Luas operators and they have a different approach to industrial relations and the drivers are less militant and less likely to stop working in support of their fellow drivers in CIE.
Back to disagreeing on the bus part...
Say the bus costs €300k with a conservative working lifetime of 10 years. So that is €30k a year or approx €600 a week or approx €85 a day. Then allow 30% on top for insurance, maintenance etc. Thats approx €120 a day.
Whereas drivers conservatively cost about €25 an hour (When total cost of Wages, holiday pay and Employer PRSI is taken into account).
So on the 10 hour day for the bus it costs €120 compared to a minimum of €250 for the driver and that is being conservative. I would say the hourly rate is much higher for CIE drivers with any sort of service.
Just saying.
I didnt allow for fuel but thats probably another €50 a day (based on my experience driving a truck) and probably less with the new eco buses and fuel subsidies.
