4,000 needed for taxi protest, 28th May

Taxi drivers geared up to protest over lack of help  (Sunday Times, 16th May 2021)

Quote
Taxi drivers will consider staging a protest in Merrion Square, Dublin, on May 28 to highlight what they say is a lack of government support during the pandemic.  Dave McGuinness, from TTnH, a taxi drivers’ group, said he was talking to others to arrange the event and up to 4,000 people are expected to attend.  “Everyone in the industry has been affected by the pandemic and the lack of intervention by the government,” he said.

The groups are seeking financial support until viability returns, and help with fixed costs. They also want the issuance of new licences put on hold.  McGuinness said operators had been promised a meeting with the taoiseach but they needed action, having met Leo Varadkar, the tanaiste, and Eamon Ryan, the transport minister.  "We need solutions, not just another meeting," he said.

Four taxi groups have declined to take part in an official committee, Gerard Macken, of the Taxi Alliance said: "The committee has done absolutely nothing throughout this pandemic."  The government said one committee vacancy had been left open should taxi groups change their mind.

I'd go back to work today if there was work to go back to Jack. There isn't so I'm not. The thoughts of driving around putting miles on me jammer and burning petrol for hours on end and scraping a fiver an hour before expenses do not appeal to me. I'll wait till the night clubs reopen. I can't do day work. Too much traffic and too many stuck up dick heads for my liking.

After costs .Car payment, insurance ,Fuel I made 26 euro last month .Fair play to them for trying but unless they post an agenda of what they are looking for I wont be there .Just a heads up for them but they never ever listen The SUPREME COURT has ruled the Minister cannot restrict the issue of taxi licences .If you want to reduce the fleet Merch has told you how make the drivers test harder and stop issuing drivers licences .If there is no supply of drivers then vehicles will remain parked up .There is NOTHING stopping the issuing of taxi drivers licences in fact if you already hold a driving licence and want to be a driving instructor there is an additional driving test so why not add a driving test to the taxi DRIVERS test .

Here is another thing they might look for and why .The EU have given Ireland 900 million in recovery funds to help get businessup and running and promote a green recovery .In the 2012 review the minister said he wanted all drivers alligned to a dispatch company .So why not ask the minister to set up a National Dispatch App that will not charge commission but will be funded by increased licence fees .A lot of drivers are still thinking they dont want the taxman to know how much they are earning but within a few years all transactions will be cashless and even if 100% of your earnings is traceable your tax liability would be significantly less than handing over huge comission on all your earnings than handing over income tax on your after deductions minus tax credits .A whole lot less more money in your pocket !There is EU funding available to set up a scheme as it would offer the job to the nearest car it would be Greener than what we have now .

I was thinking of getting the driving instructor test John. My old man did it for years. Might be a better option than the taxi which is totally fooked right now.

Im looking into it .You need Garda vetting then there are three exams then its two and a bit to register .Then you either car up or rent one from a driving school there are a few examiners jobs going but short time contracts .Im wondering with tech and 3D will we do our Drivers Education in a simulator and only need testers for the actual test .You could be investing in a dying industry .
