Therein lies the problem with taxi drivers and unions. Whenever someone tries to do good for the industry,he is slated.
Over the years we have had numerous different people put themselves forward to help lead drivers and each and every one of them came in for a barrage of abuse.
The numbers of drivers are greater than the Vintners Association, look how they stick together and get places with their constant lobbying of the Government
Taxi drivers are divided and never taken seriously by any city council or Government.
We only have ourselves to blame

When you see the calibre of what went before you'd understand the overall cynicism. Feathernesters for the best part, Downright shysters for the rest.

Justin there  are too many agendas going on that you dont know about that splits the so called Reps .When you have Multi plate millionair owners looking to protect their businesses and Millionair Dispatchers looking out for themselves the one man band wont get a look in .In the past I found out that the whole thing cant work .I was a member of a Group and at a Meeting about a Letter to be sent to Minister Dempsey I fought for ONE WORD to be changed .the word was WILL to be changed to MAY .The letter was informing the Minister that if he didnt do this then we WOULD do this .That in Political speak is a declaration .No minister would grant you a meeting if you were leaving no room to negotiate that is why you say MAY and retain the option in the event your meeting with the Minister does not go well .It was agreed to make the change it was minuted but when the letter went out the word WILL was what was sent .I knew then there were other agendas at play so I walked

Justin .Here is the dilemma .Drivers say there are to many taxis /Prove it ? It cannot be proved as it is not possible to say who will or will not be a customer .Drivers say there are to many tax cabs and they want  no more .The problem there is most of us got licences because of a Supreme Court Judgement that stated the Minister has  no power to stop anybody from getting a licence other than by regulating the actual vehicle .After the 2012 review there were to be no more Saloon Plates and only A1 standard WATs .But reps appealed the WAV standard saying drivers who needed to change their WAT couldnt afford the new replacement so the standard was dropped for the Peugeot Partner which could be bought for about 6000 on the road or cheaper than a Saloon Plate without a vehicle .The simple thing is every driver needs to protect HIS interests and his interest might not be your interest .On the Pub thing you are actually not looking closely enough .Pubs like Cabs were deregulated .When I was a Kid up until about 1980 there were very few Off licences in Dublin .If we wanted porter to take away in Inchicore You had Paddy Kennys supermarket on Tyrconnell road an off licence on Emmett Road one in Rialto one in the Barn one hidden away on Sandwith Street and one at the bottom of the SCR or Mays on Montpellier Hill .Most people bought their take away from the Pub at full pub prices .Now with the Exception of the Confession Box in the Oblates Church every other shop in the area or garage does drink your own gargle take aways .The Publicans couldnt stop that .

So Justin you want less taxis so who do you want to get rid of .Blacks ,Asians ,Wheelchair vans.Saloon Cars ,Red Heads ,Fat Lads .any or all of them as long as its not me .And there is the problem .But if you wanted to really make a start why not chip the meeter that would refuse another fare after a driver had worked certain amount of hours and taken a certain amount of rest just like other transport providers .That would regulate the amount of cars working per shift but it would never be considered .

If you want to assist to try  protect your taxi hobby..... Buy Electric..... I Get jobs on freenow an Ther marked eco.... Not many but 5-15. % approx... The option is Ther for punters on passenger app
I still think freenow will bring in Ther own fleet of electric wheelys bins For rent only an one step ahead on priority of the ordinary Ambassadors licky lacky .....they'll also be allowed access to areas in the city which will be excluded to traffic very shortly......  Then the rest yous down the food chain will get the odd street hail an then be forced out.... Eatin pot noodles.....
I'de say Éamonn the cabbage has a bigger ear for freenow than boyd barret...... Isn't that the way now with our alleged "governments" does  business....?

Buying 100% 1st and 2nd gen electric is a penny wise pound foolish move. Euro 6 Diesel, petrol,or hybrid version of diesel or petrol is the only realistic way.

There's plenty up here in Dublin already driving electric. The new grants are proving popular.

I passed the Raheny rank today at 11.15 and it was full of diesel cars, and still no work.

The market can only be regulated via qualitative measures, not quantitative ones. To create more work we need more alleged drivers like Ermy. 8)

When a Renault Zoe is being passed out as a taxi...says it all, reminds me seeing a plated up Fiat Punto in the noughties.

I'd take a chance on a leccy car if the numbers added up...which they do for me, but Dublin bus are still buying Diesel-electric hybrid buses so I don't see why we should be forced into into fully leccy cars.

Eamon Ryan drives an ancient diesel VW camper van to work when he's not on the push bike.
