A UNIVERSITY student was celebrating a GAA win when he was arrested for trying to hit a taxi and shouting abuse at the driver.
Luke O’Flynn (19) thought his behaviour was “a joke” as other revellers he was with were climbing on top of the cab, a court heard.
Judge Michael Walsh struck the case out, leaving him without a conviction, after he made a €250 charity donation.
O’Flynn, with an address at Mayfield, Cashel, Co Tipperary, pleaded guilty to threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour in the incident.
Garda Sergeant Zita Woods told Dublin District Court a taxi driver approached gardaí at South Great George’s Street at 1.30am last August 23.
He told them a man had tried to hit the taxi and shouted abuse at him.
The accused was arrested.
O’Flynn was a university student in commerce and French who had travelled to Dublin for a GAA match and had been out “all day long,” his lawyer said.
“He had been drinking lemonade all night, had he?” the judge asked.
People he was with were climbing on top of the taxi and he did what he did as “a joke,” but it “obviously wasn’t funny", the lawyer said.
It was “very immature carry on” and had been a serious wake up call for O’Flynn.
The accused’s lawyer asked for O’Flynn to be left without a conviction.
Judge Walsh told him to make a €250 donation to Crumlin Children’s Hospital and struck the charge out after the money was paid.
