Taxi Fairytale of Cork city;
(Think of it with the tune of Shane's 'Fairytale of New York' in your head).
It was Christmas Eve babe, on the Taxi rank,
T'was a busy little Christmas on the southside of Cork
I looked cross the harbour, thought 'That's nor fer me'
the Norries and Pikeys are fine fer a while
No milk nor No money and short on de Honey
on a cold Christmas eve I ain't going over dere.
So Happy Christmas
the vaccines doing Fuck all,
we will see a better time
when all our dreams come true.
On the southside of Cork they got cars big as Mars
the 4 by 4's they adore are really a bore
in 'Roco' they have rivers full of false gold
and the wind from the ocean goes right through to your core
you might as well be standing on the top cliffs of Clare
this wind from the Atlantic has no fear of your dear.
When I got my first customer on that cold Christmas night
she promised a tip was waiting fer me,
I was handsome
she was pretty
the Queen of Cork city,
When the fare it was finished she howled out fer less,
'Joe Mac, he was swinging'
'All the drunks they were singing',
but she wouldn't cough up and I settled fer less
she mused fer a while and then she let loose;
"You're a scumbag, a cab maggot, a cheap lousy faggot,
Happy Christmas my arse, I pray God it's your last."
On my second fare
an old man said to me, 'won't see another one'
and then he sang a song
The Rare old Mountain Dew
I pushed him out and threw at him his shoe.
I got a lucky one cashed in for Eighty and one
after winning 6 Ton on the dogs at Ballymun.
I've got a feeling This years for me and my Joe.
The boys on the ranks were singing 'Banks o' the Lee',
and the bells were ringing out fer Christmas day.
I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
The Taxi took my dreams from me
When I first found it
I kept them with me babe
The Covid was not my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around it
The boys on the ranks
Still singing 'Banks o' the Lee'
And the Shandon bells were ringing out
Fer Christmas Day ! .........
