Drove the lovely person who was Maeve Binchy to a reunion of some of her college friends ,in a house in D4, and she told me a story about one of those lady friends whose fiance , the night before the wedding, had told the lady that he couldn't go through with it,i.e. he bottled it. Apparently she took it very calmly, and suggested that rather than embarrass a bride by being stood up at the altar, he should arrive at the altar, and she would not turn up, thus ending the matter on her terms. However, on the day, she did turn up in her wedding finery, and joined him at the altar, and the wedding went through as normal. She assured me that they were both very happy together 40+ years on, as the bride had no doubt about the man's love for her, and was confident that it was just nerves.
