AFAIK, no chargers are free.  There might have been some free slow ones in Aldi/Lidl if your were shopping but I think that stopped.  Some of the showrooms have chargers and I've heard of some people going in a blagging and a few hours on them.  Some hotels etc are free but they expect you to be staying there!

The external chargers are 'cheap' at the moment.  In the UK, the price is going from 40 pence to 50 pence/kWh (~48-->~60 cents).  I don't think we'll go that bad but it might rise.  ESB Ecars have a balancing act.  At the moment, they're undercutting the private competition on price (very roughly 30c v. 35c).  If they raise their prices, people will move to the private chargers and that will encourage the private chargers to increase their number.

The chargers at Blanch are an anomaly and a bit of a fuk up.  There's a rapid 50kw and a 150kw high power charger (HPC) there.  They have 22 or 43kW chargers on them as well but the HPC is pointless in the middle of a huge shopping centre.  There really should be 4 or 8 or 12 'destination' chargers (22/43kW) there so people can charge for 2 or 3 hours while they're shopping/eating/at the cinema.   Rapid (50) or HPC (150) should be placed where people are on the go and in a rush (eg airport/port/motorways).

I often use external dryers for household washing. If I was late in returning to collect the clothes I'm quite sure someone would become impatient and unload them and deposit them in the washing drum next door.

Is it OK if you notice that a charging cycle is over, but the car owner is nowhere to be seen, to unplug his lead and to connect your own?

I don't think it's possible to know when the first car is finished.  It's up to them when they finish.

For example, eCars charge you an extra €4.60 if you go past 46 mins (geddit) on a rapid charger.  The app tells you when they started so, the other day, I parked beside a tourist EV thinking they'd be finished in 5 mins at the 45 min mark.  But they must have been planning a long journey so they stayed past the 46mins and took the penalty so they could fill up the battery as much as possible.  I left after 10 mins but kept an eye on them via the app.  I think they stayed 90 mins.

The correct answer (prob invented by middle-class people) is that the first car sticks a notice on their car staying when they'll be finished or display their mobile number to call.  Needless to say, there's an app for that but I don't know what it is.

P.S. the rapid chargers uses a lot of direct current (DC) so the cable is quite thick and supplied by the charger.  I guess if you didn't disconnect properly, it's possible the DC cable might get stuck in the first car and then both of ye are fukked!  (You don't use your own cable unless it's for the slow AC (22/43kW) or you're home-charging on AC.)

That's interesting. I thought (and I'm not sure why) the car released - as in unlocked - the cable once it's charged to whatever level (e.g. 80%) you set so the next man can unplug you and plug himself in, assuming you're not about.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Are thefts common? I've heard of one up above in Dublin. I'm not sure the thieves would care if it's tethered or not, it's probably the box they're after rather than the lead?

I don't have the answer to that for definite.  All EV's, afaik, have an emergency release cable to release the charger if it gets stuck.  So maybe getting stuck is/was common enough to warrant the emergency release cable?

The MG5 does release the charger when I stop charging but you can't rip it out when it is charging.   Once the external charger 'froze' at the initial 'handshake' and wouldn't release the cable for maybe 5 minutes.  Only happened to me once though.

In the MG5, you cannot program an end-point to stop charging at an external rapid charger because... (I'm sure it's more complicated that this)... the DC goes straight into the battery and the Battery Management Software (BMS) only has a little bit of control of it.

I also understand that, industry-wide, BMS software is still in the infancy stage and there isn't enough agreed communication protocols when it comes to charging.  So the charging stations take the lowest common denominator - charge on & charge off & a few other things.  Some home chargers can stop at a certain percentage but I believe that's the charger doing it and not the car's BMS.

The technology is evolving rapidly so I'd bet there are new EV's out there that are clever enough to do all the above.
