Taxpayers hit for €500 Dublin to Mayo taxi fare for three ‘asylum shoppers’

Three asylum seekers from Palestine who arrived in Dublin Airport last Wednesday were taken by taxi to Co Mayo at a cost of €500 to the taxpayer, as government agencies struggle to find accommodation and transport for refugees.

The three single men, all in their 20s, arrived on a flight from Italy on Wednesday morning. They said they wished to claim asylum and were processed by officers from the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB).

As is protocol, the asylum seekers then officially entered the refugee system, so it became the responsibility of the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) to secure the men’s transportation to their new temporary lodgings — either a direct provision centre or emergency hotel accommodation.

When possible, IPAS puts asylum seekers in temporary accommodation in Ballymun or Swords in north Dublin upon arrival. However, none was available, and the men were instead sent via taxi to emergency accommodation in Claremorris, Co Mayo. This taxi trip cost €500, it is understood.

A spokesperson from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth — which oversees IPAS — said the department “does not comment on individual cases”.

While people fleeing the invasion of Ukraine are not entering the country seeking asylum, the influx is “putting a strain” on the accommodation availability for all of those seeking refuge.

If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

The Shinners are conspicuous in their silence.

Did the taxi have the light on the roof sign turned off indicating it was occupied, in sympathy with the citizens of Palestine? 8)

I wonder did the CX of a kettle and phone get the gig and hoped no one mentions Hezbollah! rofl

A bloke on a rank was telling me NTA are going to lift the current temporary moratorium on the issue of saloon plates in respect of EVs and all (Ukranian) refugees will be entitled to business startup grants that will cover the full price of a VW ID4 after the normal grants are taken into account.

The NTA better start making EV's so, as the Dealers are giving Lead Times of up to a Year..... lol

True enough. An EV driver would be laughing all the way to the bank  I reckon it would cost an EV €22 total in fuel v. €54 for diesel  ;) An extra €22 profit for the EV!

Yes.  The current MG ZS and the Renault Zoe (!) might not but all the other taxi EVs should.  The new 2022/23 ZS will defo do it.

Google says Dublin - Mayo is approx 3.5 hours and 250 km.  My MG5 battery (60kWh) is probably average and would have a real world range of 300km.

Even in a diesel, you'll unlikely to drive 3.5hrs with 3 strangers without stopping for a toilet/cig/coffee breaik.  The Palestinian refugees might even want to stop to pray to Allah?  So an EV could top-up during that 20 min - a diesel taxi would probably stick a tenner in just in case?  The HPC 150kW charger in Enfield, for example, would give me ~200km extra in 30mins.

The story doesn't mention where in Mayo but there are rapid chargers along the N5 (Castlebar, Ballaghderreen, Longford, Multyfarnham, Mullingar, Enfield and you're basically back to civilization then!

Don't know about Ireland but the breakdown services in the UK do have special vans for EV dead batteries.

The last time I did Cork to Dub airport and back in a 2L D4D Avensis it took just under half a tank of diesel (30 notes at the time) and no worrying about charging points.

The Mayo run is shite because the motorway disappears two thirds of the way.
