Capel St closed to cars from Saturday

Dublin's Capel Street to be traffic free from Friday

Quote
Dublin's Capel Street is set to be traffic free from Friday, making it the longest pedestrianised street in the capital.

It comes after the street was made traffic free over 17 weekend evenings last summer to trial the idea.  According to Dublin City Council (DCC), 91 per cent of the 1,766 submissions received were in favour of the proposal.  To facilitate the move, works are set to be carried out overnight on Thursday, with leaflets being distributed to advise residents and businesses.  There will be several changes to accommodate the move, including seating and greening to improve the street.  Traffic management staff will also be on site for the first two weeks, while the changes will be reviewed at the end of the summer.

From this Friday, the street will be traffic free with the exception of deliveries between 6am and 11am, while car parking spaces will be removed and converted to loading bays.  DCC have said there will be a permanent closure at Parnell Street after Jervis Lane to remove through traffic on Capel Street.  Meanwhile, Mary’s Abbey traffic flow direction will be reversed and residents existing from Abbey Street will exit via Mary’s Abbey.  Mary Street between Capel Street and Jervis Lane will also be reversed.  However, Strand Street Little and Strand Street Great will remain open to traffic all day.

The move to make the street traffic free has received a mixed reaction, with DCC previously saying it had received solicitor letters over its plans for the street, but no business has threatened legal action.

This should be interesting as there's not many bridges left where you can cross the Liffey!  Imagine how bad Church St is gonna get or could it get any worse?

This might be the final nail in the coffin of Parnell St/Ilac Centre.  It was already a disaster trying to get onto Parnell St but now it's gonna crazy to leave Parnell St.

It could be good for local businesses .If Big Dommo buys a Small electric generatorin Mc Quillans  in case of powercuts in the flats if he needs to move it he might go into one of the charity shops and buy a part worn pram .Morally it could also be good Some dirty oulone buying a battery operated Mickey in one of the sex shops wont be able to escape with her tool un noticed by jumping into a passing Taxi but think of the poor prisoners who were released early morning from the Joy who will now have to walk down Capel Street with their clear Plastic bag containing their prison tracksuit second pair of runners and radio on their way to Slatterys early House  to spend their Gratt on  pints .Did nobody think about how they will feel .

The plastic bags aren't clear, they're green,I've driven past and ignored cunts hailing me who were holding said bags,it wasn't the bags that gave them away, just one look at the cunts and ye know they're not the quality clientèle you're used to of a day shift...I generally gesture to them that I'm on a screamer from the Mater to Stoneybatter!!
