Who wants to drink till 6am in the morning ?
« on: October 29, 2022, 06:28:02 am »
Whom wants to drink till 6am in the morning ?

There might be a few bar staff after leaving their own private lock-in.
Or a few night shift workers after finishing.
Or a few who already well too drunk fancy a few more.

Outside of a few main clubs in Dooblin city centre I reckon the 6am thing is a total Dead Duck with only a handful of customers on the premises, and the club have to pay security staff all night.

You? Looks like you've made 6 posts between 5.30-6.30am.
Maybe you'd go to a 5am pub for a chat...

They can't get staff to work to 3am. 6am won't happen in practice... the only folk that'd avail of it will put the same money across the counter regardless of chucking out time. Before the landlord of my own local passed away clients could stay pretty much as late as they liked, very few stayed much later than 2ish.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Would he want to listen to pumping noise that the youngsters call music? There may we'll be a market for shift workers wanting a pint and a chat but the focus of the legislation seems to be to shift the disco goers from c.00:04 - c.03:07 to c.03:04 - c 06:07. Personally I can't see that interesting the publicans to any great extent.

Yis are all assuming the only way to drink alcohol is the Oirish way - start at 9pm and keep going until you drink yourself unconscious or you get knocked out during the post-pub fight outside the chipper.  If you go to my local mid-week, you're more likely to see people eating their dinner and a glass of wine for €15 rather than 5 lads knocking back pints at the bar.

Little venues (above a regular pub maybe) might sprout up that support niche activities.  Maybe a sports club that watches live American sports?  Or a cinema club that severs dinner before/after the movie with an invited speaker afterwards.  Or maybe a 'come-down'/chill-out venue.  Or maybe a venue for night-workers only?

There's a tea cafe in a basement along Ormond Quay and it's been going for 10 years or more.  I only went once (against my will) and i thought it was stupid.  But it's still there after 10 years so there is a market for it.

Maybe the young folk might visit 3 venues in one night?  1. (9-midnight) The pub downing Guinness whilst talking sport.  2. (midnight - 3am) A traditional nightclub with more drugs and less talk.  3.  (3-6am) A chill-out  serving small amounts of alcohol, more fancy drinks and casual buffet-type food.

Who knows what we pop up once people are given a chance to try out new ideas!

Leeson Street survived because people didn't want to go home at three.

Gigs place on South Richmond Street was absolutely hopping for "Breakfast" after three AM. The Manhattan on Harcourt  Road was open until the sun came up.

My favourite haunt was Eliza Blues on the quays in Temple Bar. You could leave a club, and knock on the shutters of Eliza's - which was a restaurant until midnight - then a speakeasy rave afterward.

Lots of scope for late -night venues.

The Gaiety had Mambo & Velure until 05.00 - absolutely brilliant, with club music, live Jazz and a silent movie in the theatre to chill...deadly.

I once had one of the managers of Reardens (by far the biggest nightclub in Cork) in the cab and he very unexpectantly told me that the quietest half hour of the night was usually 2am to 2.30am stating that most had had enough by then.

Not at all. As noted, when one could stay in my local as late as one wished (within reason) very few punters stayed after 1.30-2a.m. Most folk have (or want) to be up in the morning.... and the late crowd generally wouldn't come in 'till close to official closing time.

Probably didn't want to miss the post-pub fights outside the chipper  :2cheers

Seriously though, it's still an Oirish thing to drink until 2am and call it quits.  Until the Guards started running morning checkpoints, a lot of people thought if they got a few hours kip they'd be alright for work the next day.  I've no link but I believe up to 1/3 of drunk drivers are caught the next morning.
