Buildings named after taxi drivers?
« on: January 07, 2023, 03:42:05 pm »
I picked up an elderly lady recently and dropped her to Donaghmede. She said her late father was the best taxi driver Dublin ever had [they all are].
She said, "Look up the name Joe Sartini".

His name came up in the blog "Come here to me now" and I discovered a building name after him on Dominic Street called Joe Sartini Court, but that's pretty much it.

Does anyone know the name, or why he was famous?

Buildings named after taxi drivers should not include Grange-Gorman or Usher's island service station! 8)

i was at the petrol station in donaghmede i think it was the end of stephen's night about 6am.
i was bullin for a can of coke for some reason. i walked in and there was a lady late 40s talkin absolute bollocks to the girl behind the counter and then she turned around and started staring hole in my head.
she was decked out. very well dressed and beautiful make up but there was sumtin definitely off. tellin the girl behind the counter she did'nt want to tap her card because she was worried about credit card fraud or sumtin. paranoid schizo or sumtin.
paid for my gear and when i was leaving i realised she'd been holding the door open for me the whole time and told me to hurry up.
chattin to her and she said her father was loved in donaghmede and his memorial service was today or sumtin and she started crying.
where are ye going love i says. inta town she says on the bus. fuckin freezing and raining and i said sit in my car there until the bus arrives beside the taxi rank. thank fuck the bus arrived around 5 minutes later. total nutjob.

How old was the elderly lady?

https://source.southdublinlibraries.ie/bitstream/10599/11555/3/tOglachSummer1961.pdf (PDF)

That link is a newspaper scan (An tOglach) from 1961.  It lists the deaths of 'old I.R.A. men' in 1961 and there's a Joseph Sartini?  There was a good bit of military activity in the Phibsboro area during the 1916 rising.  Dunno about the civil war.  Could he have been an old soldier who got a taxi licence after he left the military?  Both occupations could have made him well-known in the area?

Getting old is compulsory whilst growing up is voluntary.

My Mother-in-law lives on Ardara Avenue. We always meet that woman. While she is mad as a brush, she's mad with style.

I saw that he was from Kevin's St flats and that Dominic Street Upper is in Phibsboro'. Joe Sartini Court is listed as Phibsboro'. If he was also a community activist it might make sense, a bit like Willie Bermingham Place, named after the fireman who set up ALONE.

The census had him as a school-going kid in 1911.

If he was an activist, I reckon there'd be more info about him on the internet?

I think Mick Wallace built that apartment block.  I wonder if he named it as well?  Maybe the planning application is on the internet and he explains why he'd called it after yer man?

I might give Savill's a ring and see if they can shed any light.

Christy Moore sings about him on the Magic Nights album: Inchicore Wake. Joe Sartini and his two-saddled bike.

Ah yes mad Margaret. Absolutely nuts. She approached me a couple of months ago in Clarehall telling me Ronan Keating had been gunned down. She's around all the time. Very stylish, very tall and elegant if I may so but completely bonkers.

Very stylish but off her fuckin trolly
I think I seen her one Sunday afternoon by the fountain, blonde, mid-foties, very well dressed and chatting away to herself !

Have you seen Breda, the Douglas street woman with the rastafarian hat around lately ?
I saw her comatose on Bridge street about 6 months back which is a long way from her nesting spot and rang the gardai as I was worried about her. I haven't seen her on the street since.
