Do you give beggars money?
« on: September 29, 2023, 02:28:22 pm »
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

Just saw one beg for money now, only 1 guy gave her money. Roma gypsy woman with a picture of her family.

Should we? Are we wrong to refuse them? A few euro wouldn't break us.

Most people look at them like they are doing something wrong and are bad people but I don't think they are usually.

Saying that I knew a roma guy who lived in a house but had his wife out begging on the street acting homeless.

He showed me a video of his 10 bed house in Romania.
I asked him would he not sell it as he was living in ireland, he said its nice to have it.

Used to drop him to a prison to sign on.

Apart from the Irish Govt, no.

Also, if you're anyway vulnerable and you show you have money, you're just as likely to get beaten up and robbed of your wallet, phone & cigs.

Not since I drove a tapper home to Tallaght one night over 20 years ago and he told me what how much he'd "earned".

Back when I worked the bus, again over 20 years ago, there was an old school taximan (can't remember his name now) who brought homemade sandwiches in with him for the tappers/homeless nearly every day which I found quite admirable but never got round to replicating.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Nope ! I never give them a cent !

Beggar 1 prob has more money than me.
Beggar 2 only wants money fer drugs or alcohol.

I do my fair share of charity work with the Street Pastors in Cork.

They often require Taxi services fer people in distress by night and I do it voluntarily, with the provisio that they must be 'Fit to travel'.

If I'm thinking of the same fella, I'm pretty sure I've seen him walking properly.  He used to have the spot on the quays at the bottom of Queen St?

Anyways, didn't some comedian say cocaine is God's way of telling you you're earning too much money!

Some of them probably have private jets as well, handy for flying back to their mansions in  Monaco or Zurich after a day's begging on o connell bridge.

I was out in Dublin just before last Christmas, at a gig, just after it, we were waiting for a taxi and an Irish female begger asked our group for money, a random woman we met said of course you can love and gave her money (very nice woman i thought from her reaction to the beggar), then my friend did as well, I think I actually did then because you would kind of feel like a prick if you don't and the people you are with gave her money.
Peer pressure.
